SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – UCLA freshman Amari Bailey has been selected to the 20-person watch list for this season's Jerry West Award, which honors the nation's best collegiate shooting guard.
Bailey, a 6-foot-5 guard from Chicago, will make his collegiate debut with the Bruins next month. He secured McDonald's All-America honors as a senior at Sierra Canyon School in Chatsworth, Calif., in 2021-22.
College basketball's annual position-by-position watch lists, as announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, are being revealed this week. UCLA's Tyger Campbell was listed to the preseason watch list for the Bob Cousy Award (point guard) on Monday.
Bailey averaged 18.5 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists as a senior last season at Sierra Canyon School. He helped lead his high school team to a 26-5 overall record, advancing to the CIF State Open Division regional title contest against Corona Centennial High School. As a junior (2020-21), Bailey averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 6.2 assists in a pandemic-altered high school season. Bailey concluded his junior season having tallied three triple-doubles for Sierra Canyon.
The 2022-23 season will mark the ninth year in which the Jerry West Award recognizes the top shooting guard in NCAA Division I men's basketball. The award honors the contributions of former West Virginia University standout Jerry West, who averaged 24.8 points and 13.3 rebounds in three varsity seasons and led his team to the NCAA title contest in 1959. West was named a consensus All-American in 1959 and 1960 before enjoying a strong 14-year NBA career with the Los Angeles Lakers. Wisconsin's Johnny Davis was honored as the Jerry West Award winner in 2021-22.
College basketball fans can participate in fan voting, presented by Dell Technologies, starting on Friday, Oct. 28. The top 10 player selections from the fan vote will get an additional vote towards making the next round. The list of 20 preseason candidates for the Jerry West Award will narrow to 10 student-athletes in late January. Five finalists will be selected in late February. Those five finalists will be presented in March 2022, before the Hall of Fame's selection committee, where a winner will be selected.
The list of Jerry West Award candidates remains fluid, as student-athletes have the ability to play themselves on or off the list until the five finalists are announced.
The winner of this season's Jerry West Award will be presented on a date (to be determined) along with the other four members of the "men's starting five," including the Bob Cousy Point Guard Award, the Julius Erving Small Forward Award, the Karl Malone Power Forward Award and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center Award.
