Sun Devils Finish Second at East Lake

Oct 26, 2022

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Sun Devils fell just short to Vanderbilt in the last match of the finals at the East Lake Cup Tuesday. 3-2 in the prestigious four-team field.

Luke Potter started the Sun Devils day off strong by going 1-up with a birdie putt on the 18th hole to secure ASU's first point. It was his second win in as many days after finishing second overall in stroke play two days ago.

"Luke went out first and got us a point which was huge," Associate Head Coach Thomas Sutton said. "He is impressive to watch compete and hits his best shots down the stretch. I think you will see many more putts like that for Luke in the future."

Preston Summerhays had a huge backnine to ensure a 3&1 victory in his match. His shot onto the green from the fairway on hole-17 helped secure the win.

Michael Mjaaseth led for the first eight holes of the round. He lost 2&1 ending his round on the 17th hole. Ryggs Johnston lost 7&6 and finished his day on hole 12. Josele Ballester fell 1-up after holding the lead for majority of the back-nine. Vanderbilt birdied 18 in Ballester's match to win the East Lake Cup.

"Well we were there," Head Coach Matt Thurmond said. "Again in the final match on the final holes on the biggest stage. We are a little tired of runner up but we still played awesome all week and all Fall.  We will work for continued improvement and refinement and be even more ready the next time."

The Sun Devils will have a three month break until their next event. The Southwestern Invitational will take place Jan. 30- Feb. 1 at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, California. The last time Arizona State participated in the Southwestern Invitational, they won by 13 strokes out of a 12-team field.
