UCLA Men's Basketball Attends Pac-12 Media Day
SAN FRANCISCO – UCLA seniors Tyger Campbell and Jaime Jaquez Jr. served as the UCLA men's basketball student-athlete representatives at Pac-12 Media Day on Wednesday, hosted at the Pac-12 Conference's headquarters.
Campbell and Jaquez Jr. were joined by Mick Cronin, who enters his fourth year as The Michael Price Family UCLA Men's Head Basketball Coach. Campbell and Jaquez, along with Coach Cronin, participated in various interviews with members of print, broadcast and online media, in addition to taping multiple promotional videos to be used during the season by the league's broadcast partners.
Earlier on Wednesday morning, UCLA was selected first in the conference's annual preseason media poll. The Bruins received 26 of 33 possible first-place votes in the preseason media poll. Arizona (selected second) and Oregon (selected third) each tallied three first-place votes. USC was picked fourth in the preseason poll, followed by Stanford (who received one first-place vote).
UCLA totaled a 27-8 record last season, advancing to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16. The Bruins went 15-5 in Pac-12 play, defeating Washington State and USC in the Pac-12 Tournament before falling to top-seeded Arizona in the tournament's title contest.
"We're excited about the season," Cronin said in his opening remarks on Wednesday (full transcript available here). "We've got five guys on our team who have played in the Final Four, but we've got a lot of freshmen as well. We are just excited to get started. We're trying to get Mac [Etienne] and Will [McClendon] healthy and back to full strength, but it's always nice when you've got two guys who could win player of the year in the league on your team [Tyger Campbell, Jaime Jaquez Jr.]."
Earlier in the week, Campbell and Jaquez Jr. were listed as two of the 10 selections to the preseason All-Pac-12 first team. The Pac-12 also unveiled a five-man list of second team selections. Junior Jaylen Clark and freshman Amari Bailey were listed as honorable mention preseason all-conference selections.
Campbell, a 5-foot-11 senior from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has secured first-team All-Pac-12 honors the past two seasons (2020-21 as a sophomore, 2021-22 as a junior). Jaquez Jr. was honored as a second-team all-conference selection in 2020-21 (sophomore season), before capturing first-team All-Pac-12 acclaim in 2021-22 (junior season).
UCLA is scheduled to return to Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom for an exhibition game next Wednesday evening. The Bruins will host Concordia University Irvine at 7 p.m. (Wednesday, Nov. 2). UCLA's regular-season schedule tips off against Sacramento State on Monday, Nov. 7.
