Greubel’s Brace Fuels Rout
STANFORD, Calif. – Graduate student Abby Greubel scored a pair of goals to fuel No. 7 Stanford's (15-2-1, 8-1-0 Pac-12) 5-0 rout of Utah (6-7-4, 2-5-2 Pac-12) on Thursday from Cagan Stadium.
The win stretched Stanford's win streak to eight matches, while it has not allowed a goal in the last four. The four consecutive shutouts are the most for the Cardinal since stringing together four from November 8-24, 2019.
Greubel contributed the third and fourth goals of the day for the Cardinal, finding the back of the net in the 35th and 48th minutes.
The multi-goal match, Greubel's second of her career, ran her season scoring total to four. The native of Santa Ana, Calif. had previously notched a pair of goals against CSUN on August 26, 2021.
Stanford, which outshot Utah 28-9 in the victory, wasted no time getting on the board as freshman Elise Evans scored in the second minute off a corner kick. The ball was sent in by Jasmine Aikey, where it ping-ponged around the box before eventually falling to Evans who put it away for her third goal of the year – all coming on corner-kick opportunities.
Junior Samantha Williams extended the Cardinal lead to 2-0 in the 20th minute when she dribbled the bulk of the field and laced her right-footed shot to the lower-left 90 to beat Utah goalkeeper Evie Vitali. Vitali would finish the match with eight saves as Stanford put 13 of its 28 shots on frame.
Greubel, who hit the post with one of her earlier shots in the match, received a pass from sophomore Kellie Pagador on the left wing before dribbling into the box and putting a shot past Vitali on the near post for her first of the day.
Williams set up Greubel's second goal of the match when she sprinted down the right wing and sent a ball into the box. Aikey touched it on for Julia Leontini who then played it to Grebuel for the shot and goal.
Leontini was also credited with an assist on Evans' goal, as the junior finished the match with her first career multi-assist contest. The two-assist match is the first for the Cardinal since Sierra Enge and Andrea Kitahata had two against CSUN on August 26, 2021.
Junior Amy Sayer put the finishing touches on the runaway victory, scoring her fourth goal of the year off a pass from Enge. After a Utah defender was run off the ball, Enge one-timed a pass to Sayer who dribbled toward the top of the box and unleashed a perfectly placed right-footed shot that found the back of the net.
Junior goalkeeper Ryan Campbell played the first 67 minutes for the Cardinal, registering three saves, before handing the baton to Haley Craig. Craig notched a save of her own as Utah put up nine total shots – including three on goal.
Stanford will host Colorado for Senior Day on Sunday at noon – the final regular-season home match of the year for the Cardinal.
