Oct 29, 2022

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Washington State rowing team capped off the fall in a big way, as the Cougar's first varsity four boat won its race to highlight the day at the Head of the American for WSU.

The team of Grace Trujillo, Georgina Ericsson, Hannah Elliott, Isabella Jachymek, and Hanah Swissa clocked in at 19:22.7 to win the varsity four race at the 2022 Head of the American. Their performance put the exclamation point on a strong day of racing at Lake Natoma for Washington State. The Cougars had a total of six boats post a top-10 finish at the Head of the American, which featured 11 collegiate crews, including California, Oregon State, and UCLA.

"It was great to be back at Lake Natoma and racing tons of boats," said WSU Rowing Head Coach Jane LaRiviere. We raced to our ability in some and learned a bit about what it takes to win in others. The victory in the fours race was a nice surprise. They looked focused and aggressive today. Hats off to them for making a great race happen."

Washington State picked up a pair of top-10 finishes in the varsity eight race. WSU's first varsity eight clocked in at 17:28.2 to finish seventh in 5-kilometer timed race that featured 27 shells. The Cougs' second varsity eight earned 10th after racing down the course in 17:38.3.

In addition to WSU's first-place finish in the varsity four race, Washington State's second varsity four posted a seventh-place finish in the 16-boat race. The Cougar's 2V4+ boat clocked in at 19:60.0.

Wazzu got the Head of the American started by collecting two top-10 finishes in the pairs race. The duo of Samantha Schmidt and Jess Horrigan earned a sixth-place finish with a time of 20:56.3. Sienna Snow and Ilaria Macchi posted their third top-10 finish in a pairs race of the fall campaign, as their time of 20:59.0 was good enough for seventh in the 36-shell race.

Washington State will now head into the winter to train for the spring season. The 2023 spring schedule will be announced at a later date.
