Cardinal Shuts Out New Hampshire
DURHAM, N.H. – Qualifying for the 2022 America East Championships in its final regular season action, Stanford field hockey rolled to a 3-0 win on Sunday afternoon against New Hampshire. The Cardinal ends the regular season with an 8-8 record, including a 4-4 mark in the America East.
Lynn Vanderstichele, Cara Sambeth and Bella Ganocy scored for the Cardinal, while Fenella Scutt and Tottie Taylor each dished two assists. Kendall Dowd and Daisy Ford split the shutout in goal, with Ford making a pair of saves. The Cardinal outshot the Wildcats by an 18-4 margin and earned eight corners as opposed to four for the home team.
"I am very proud of the team's performance today," said head coach Roz Ellis. "We were communicating between lines and problem solving quarter by quarter. This team absolutely deserves to be in the tournament, and it's one game at a time now."
Following a scoreless first frame, Vanderstichele gave the Cardinal the lead with her fifth goal of the season and her third in the last four games. Taylor slid a pass to Vanderstichele inside the circle on the left side, with the senior firing a laser into the bottom right corner. The Cardinal put up eight shots in the second period alone but left for the half leading 1-0.
Sambeth doubled the Cardinal advantage 3:38 into the second half, scoring her first of the season on a penalty corner. Taylor and Scutt set up Sambeth's strike from the top of the arc. Scutt was at it again with under a minute to play in the period, collecting a rebound from her own shot before finding Ganocy for the finish in front of the cage. The score was the first of Ganocy's career, while Scutt's two assists give her a team-leading six on the season.
Fifth-seeded Stanford will travel to Maine for the America East Tournament, starting on Thursday, Nov. 3 against No. 4 Vermont. All of the action will air on ESPN+.
