Luper Strikes for Double-Double in Sweep of Utah
SALT LAKE CITY – Charitie Luper recorded a match-high 15 kills and 16 digs for her fourth double-double of the season to lead the UCLA women's volleyball team to a sweep (25-18, 25-18, 26-24) of Utah at the Jon M. Huntsman Center Sunday afternoon.
élan McCall also stuffed the stat sheet with 12 kills and eight digs in her return to the court. Setter Matti McKissock tallied 36 assists in the winning effort as well.
As a team, the Bruins (11-10, 5-7 Pac-12) struck for 45 kills at a .256 clip compared to the Utes (13-10, 6-6 Pac-12) who had exactly half as many errors (18) as kills (36).
UCLA made its move in the first set with a 4-0 run at the service line by McCall, starting with a service ace and ending with back-to-back solo blocks by Luper to put the Bruins up 18-13. McCall totaled a team-high six kills on 11 attempts in the first set.
The Bruins matched their former three-set match high for blocks this season with 12.0. Tristin Savage established a new career-high with seven blocks (1 BS, 6 BA).
A trio of Bruins – Anna Dodson, McCall and Luper – each recorded four kills apiece in the second set. UCLA took the lead at the 8-7 mark and would not let the Utes within two points for the remainder of the frame.
Facing set point at 24-23 and the possibility of a fourth set, the Bruins rallied for three consecutive points capped by Dodson's 13th kill to win the match in extras. Dodson has now notched double-digit kills three matches in a row and six total times this season.
