No. 3 USC Men’s Water Polo Storms No. 5 Stanford For 19-14 Win On Senior Day
LOS ANGELES — The No. 3 USC men's water polo team served up a strong second half to storm out of reach of visiting No. 5 Stanford and win it 19-14 today at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. In a Senior Day explosion, Jake Ehrhardt delivered four of his career-high five goals during the final 11 minutes to key USC's comeback win. The Trojans had trailed by three in the second period, but surged into the lead to stay with back-to-back goals from Ehrhardt in the third. USC improves to 15-5 overall and to 1-1 in MPSF play with the victory.
An unpredictable first half unfurled with Stanford drawing first blood. USC found two goals next — care of seniors Ehrhardt and Marcus Longton — to nudge ahead, but Stanford fired off two goals in the final minute of the first period to go up 4-3. The Cardinal kept coming, tallying two more for a four-goal surge that had USC trailing 6-3 early in the second. A three-goal rally by the Trojans would follow, with seniors Ashworth Molthen and Longton striking on natural goals before Tony Nardelli earned a 5-meter penalty for the USC cause. Massimo Di Martire rose up to finish that off, and it was tangled up even at 6-6. The teams traded goals in the next three minutes before halftime, with senior Chris Agliozzo hammering home a USC 6-on-5 finish along the way.
Tied up 8-8 at halftime, it was Stanford that made the first move again in the second half. Playing catchup, USC answered Cardinal goals with blasts from Molthen. Molthen's third goal of the day — he'd finish with four — sparked USC's rally into winning position. Knotted at 10-10, USC forged its path into the lead to stay as Ehrhardt hit twice and Carson Kranz laced in a big one off an assist from Luka Brnetic. That surge had the Trojans on top 13-10 entering the fourth frame. There, USC would keep the Cardinal at bay with an arsenal of attacks. Ehrhardt struck twice to get his tally to a career-high five, while Di Martire and Molthen each nailed their fourth. Andrej Grgurevic converted early on a 6-on-5 slam, and senior Grayden Reynolds had the last word for the Trojans to round out the 19-14 win.
Two senior goalies had hands in the Trojan victory on Senior Day, with Kyle McKenney hauling in eight saves in 31 minutes of work before Garrett Allen checked in in the final minute and snuffed a Stanford shot to help wrap the winning Senior Day for the Trojans.
USC hosts its Alumni Games next week, with the women's game set for 2 p.m. followed by a 3:30 p.m. men's game on Saturday (Nov. 5) at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
