CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA, Calif. – Carson Barry shot a 6-under 66 in the second round of play Monday at the Cal Poly Invitational to pace the Oregon State men's golf team through the first 36 holes of the two-day event.
The 6-under round marked the third of Barry's career, and the redshirt senior used that tally to find himself in a tie for third after one full day at the par-72, 7,138-yard Preserve Golf Club. Barry last shot a 6-under at the Amer Ari Invitational during the 2020-21 season.
The Eagle, Idaho native opened the first 18 with a 1-under 71, then proceeded to birdie six holes in the second round. He jumped nearly 20 spots in the standings with the effort, and is just one shot off the tournament lead.
Barry paced the Beavers, who as a team are in eighth with a 6-under 570. OSU is one shot shy of sixth.
"Overall, we played some really good golf," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "The guys did a really nice job of competing and carrying themselves in a good way. But we just let too many shots get away from us in bunches. We have to understand that making a bogey is OK ... we have to take our medicine and move on. We've got the firepower to make up for bogeys, but when you have to count three triples and doubles, that's tough to make up."
Mateo Fuenmayor, like Barry, had a strong second round. He opened the day at 1-over 73, but goes into day two at 2-under thanks to a 3-under 69 in the second round. He also finished with six birdies over the second 18, and had 10 on the day, second only to Barry for the OSU team lead. Fuenmayor opens day two tied for 23rd.
Jackson Lake tallied a 1-under 71 in the second round to finish at 1-over 145 in the first day. Lake birdied five holes in the second round and seven on the day. Lake will enter the third round tied for 46th.
A pair of OSU freshmen both finished at 4-over on Monday and ready for the final round tied for 53rd. Collin Hodgkinson and Rylan Johnson both finished at par in the first round and then 4-over in round two. Johnson finished with 10 birdies with Hodgkinson tallied eight, and also had the Beavers' only eagle of the day.
The third and final round of the event is slated to get underway at 8:30 a.m. PT Tuesday.
