5 Pac-12 teams ranked in first College Football Playoff Rankings, the most since 2017

Nov 1, 2022

The first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2022 season were revealed Tuesday and, for the first time since 2017, five Pac-12 teams are ranked in the top 25.

That ties the ACC and SEC for the most of any conference.

  • Oregon (8)
  • USC (9)
  • UCLA (12)
  • Utah (14)
  • Oregon State (23)

It's the first time that three Pac-12 teams have landed in the top 12 of the first CFP rankings, as well as the first time that four are ranked in the initial top 14.

This is the second time that two Pac-12 teams have been ranked in the top 10 of the first CFP poll of a season. (The other was in 2019 when Oregon and Utah were ranked No. 7 and No. 8, respectively.)

For the fourth straight year, Oregon is the highest-ranked Pac-12 team in the initial CFP rankings.

USC returns to the top 10 for the first time since the final 2017 CFP rankings when it finished eighth. The Trojans' No. 9 ranking is their highest ever in the initial poll.

UCLA is making its first appearance in the CFP rankings since 2014. The Bruins' No. 12 ranking is the highest in the initial CFP rankings in program history. They placed eighth in a later poll in 2014.

This is Utah's first appearance in the initial CFP rankings since 2019. The Utes have been ranked 15th or better in each of their last three appearances in the initial poll.

Oregon State, which on Monday cracked the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2013, is making its first-ever appearance in the CFP rankings.

Three games remain between these five teams, setting up an exciting November in the Pac-12.

  • No. 14 Utah at No. 8 Oregon (Nov. 19)
  • No. 9 USC at No. 12 UCLA (Nov. 19)
  • No. 8 Oregon at No. 23 Oregon State (Nov. 26)

At 5-0, Oregon currently leads the conference standings, but USC (5-1), UCLA (4-1) and Utah (4-1) are right behind it with only one loss apiece. Oregon State and Washington, both 3-2 and face each other on Friday in Seattle, aren't far behind.

The top two teams will meet in the 2022 Pac-12 Football Championship Game at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Dec. 2. Tickets can be purchased at Pac-12.com/Tickets.
