Bears Claim Victory Over Vanguard In Exhibition Game
BERKELEY – The California women's basketball team led wire to wire in an 80-58 victory over Vanguard in its sole exhibition game of the 2022-23 season at Haas Pavilion on Thursday night.
Jayda Curry was impressive all night, going 10-13 from the field including 8 of 10 from 3-point range on her way to a game-high 30-point scoring night. Evelien Schipholt added 16 points on 6-11 shooting and Ugonne Onyiah was the sole player with double figure rebounds with 10 on the night.
Cal jumped out to an early lead with an 11-0 run to start the game before finishing the half with a 12-point lead on a Curry 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Bears added to their lead in the second half, building its biggest advantage of the game of 22 points in the third quarter. Cal's interior scoring was a factor as the Bears finished with a 34-12 edge in paint points.
"This team has more depth than last year," Cal head coach Charmin Smith said. "We have some perimeter abilities that we didn't have last year, some people that are more dynamic on the wing that we're excited about. But we need more time to gel and get in sync. We'll get there."
Newcomer Kemery Martin and veteran Leilani McIntosh distributed the ball well with each going for six assists to lead all players.
Cal opens the 2022-23 regular season at home on Monday, Nov. 7 against Cal State Northridge. The contest will start at 4 p.m. PT and will be streamed on CalBears.com.
