Jayda Curry Placed On Naismith Trophy Women’s Watch List

Nov 4, 2022

BERKELEY – Cal sophomore guard Jayda Curry was placed on the Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy Women's Watch List as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Friday. Curry was one of nine sophomores to make the list, which represents the top 50 players in the country. She joins eight other players from the Pac-12 Conference who made the list.

Already named to this season's Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference team, Curry is coming off a historic 2021-22 season in which she became the first freshman in Pac-12 history to lead the conference in scoring (18.6 points per game) and to open the season with three consecutive conference Freshman of the Week honors. She concluded the season earning the media Freshman of the Year honor, an All-Pac-12 honorable mention and a spot on the Pac-12 All-Freshman team. Nationally, she led all freshmen in 3-point field goals made per game (2.2) while ranking second in scoring and total free throws made (111).

"I'm excited that Jayda is getting the national recognition that she deserves," Cal head coach Charmin Smith said. "She has been putting in a lot of work in the offseason and I expect her to continue to be a challenge for opposing teams and a leader for us this year."

The midseason 30 team will be announced in early February, and then the competition will be narrowed down to 10 national semifinalists in early March. Following those results, four finalists will be named on March 21, 2023, and the winner of the 2023 Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy for Women's Player of the Year will be announced on March 29, 2023.

Cal opens the 2022-23 regular season at home on Monday, Nov. 7 against Cal State Northridge. The contest will start at 4 p.m. PT and will be streamed through the Cal Live Stream.
