USC Women's Volleyball Tops Arizona State

LOS ANGELES – The USC women's volleyball team (17-7, 9-4 Pac-12) defeated Arizona State (11-14, 5-8) in four sets (20-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-19) at Galen Center on Friday, Nov. 4.
 
KEY PLAYERS

  • Sr. OH Skylar Fields powered the Trojan attack with 21 kills and added three blocks (one solo) and a service ace for 24.0 points. She also picked up six digs as she finished with her 22nd double-digit kills match and her 12th of 20 or more.
  • So. setter Mia Tuaniga put up 49 assists with three blocks, seven digs, a service ace, and a kill.
  • Fr. LIB Gala Trubint led the Trojans with 21 digs for her 21st match in double digits and her seventh with 20 or more. She also matched her career high with four service aces and delivered on three assists.
  • Sr. OPP Emilia Weske tallied 12 kills (4e, 28att, .286) to go with seven digs.
  • Fr. OH Jordan Wilson scored nine kills (4e, 20att, .250) and had a solo block for 10.0 points.
  • Gr. MB Kalyah Williams led the team with four blocks and had three service aces and six kills for 11.0 points.
  • For the Sun Devils, Marta Levinska led with 17 kills (6e, 44att, .250) and had the double-double with 14 digs. Iman Isanovic scored 11 kills and had seven digs. Shannon Shields put up 25 assists and had five digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Despite the Devils' best efforts, USC overcame a rough start to finish with a .217 hitting percentage to edge ASU's .215 rate. The Trojans also had the 67-59 advantage in digs and produced their sixth match in double-digit aces with 11.
  • ASU had 21 digs in the opening set and held off the USC attack to claim a 25-20 win. The Sun Devils hit .324 to USC's .068 and had 14 kills and three blocks in the win. Fields had five of her kills and Trubint logged eight digs in the first.
  • Fields tallied eight kills without an error on 13 swings (.615) in the second to lead USC to a 25-22 win. Weske scored four kills while the Trojans served four aces to even the match.
  • The third belonged to Weske who had five kills on just seven swings and posted three digs in a 25-16 USC win. The Trojans needed just 11 kills (5e, 30att, .200) and used three blocks and four more aces to go ahead, 2-1, in the match.
  • USC won the fourth, 25-19, despite a set that had six ties and five lead changes. Fields had seven kills and Wilson added six. Trubint and Kelli Barryeach had five digs apiece and helped Tuaniga put up 16 assists for the win. 

UP NEXT

  • The Trojans remain home to host Arizona (13-11, 3-10 Pac-12) on Sunday (Nov. 6) at 2 p.m. PT. The match will be shown live on Pac-12 Networks.

MATCH NOTES

  • USC swept the season series over Arizona State and improved to 75-14-1 all-time against the Sun Devils. It was the Trojans' fifth straight win over ASU and helped USC go to 37-5 in home contests with the Devils.
  • The Women of Troy improved to 11-1 at Galen Center this season and to 190-53 all-time in the arena.
  • USC's win ended a three-match streak of losses as the Trojans open a four-match home stand.
