University Place, Wash. – The UCLA cross country teams competed in the 2022 NCAA Cross Country West Regional hosted by the University of Washington on Friday, with the women's team running a 6k race and the men running a 10k in The Evergreen State. The women finished 13th in a field of 35 teams, finishing with 368 points in the meet. The men followed it up with a 10th-place finish (281 points) in their 10,000-meter race.
The Bruin women started the day of competition with their race at 10 a.m. Senior Emma Tavella led the way for UCLA, finishing 45th overall (20:07.2). Sophomore Angelina Shandro crossed next for the Bruins, placing 58th with a 20:24.1. Freshman Kaho Cichon was right behind her teammate, finishing 60th in the race (20:25.9). Junior Ashley Johnson (101st, 20:57.4) and senior Claire Selleck (104th, 20:58.7) were UCLA's final two scorers in the race.
The men's side started its 10k race at 11 a.m., and the Bruins were off to the races. Junior Ronan McMahon-Staggs was near the top of the pack, sitting at fifth place through the first 1k of the race. The Long Beach native settled into the race before finishing 21st overall (28:55.9). Junior Michael Mireles crossed the line next for the Bruins, finishing in 29:09.4 for 30th place. Peter Herold (57th, 29:39.8), Jake Parker (87th, 30:16.0), and Anthony Stone (91st, 30:19.7) rounded out scorers for UCLA.
