Women’s Tennis Claims Two Titles in Vegas

LAS VEGAS - The University of Utah Women's tennis team closed out play for their fall schedule with two championship wins at the Jolene Watanabe Classic hosted by UNLV. Marcela Lopez claimed an individual title, and Lopez and Anastasia Goncharova won their doubles title. 
 
"I am excited and proud of Marcela to be able to come out here and pick up the first two titles of her young career," Ric Mortera said. "Her and Anastasia played some really solid doubles throughout the weekend, and the results reflected that. Anastasia is starting to play a lot closer to the level we expect of her, and I am happy with the progress she has been making. Katya finished better than she started and looked to be starting to find her groove. We are trying to find a consistent output for Sam, she has been playing some really good tennis in practice, and we will work on getting that to translate to tournament matches more regularly. Overall, we got a lot of valuable information on where to improve, and this was a productive weekend. Looking forward to getting home and getting ready for the spring."
 
Anastasia Goncharova and Marcela Lopez clinched the first title of the day in doubles. They took on Molly Helgesson and Zita Kovacs from UNLV and defeated them 6-1. This was just the first of two titles that Lopez won on the day. 
 
The success didn't stop there for Lopez. She came away with her second first-place finish in singles. She faced SDSU's Alicia Melosch and came away with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. 
 
Samantha Horwood and Katya Hersh finished their doubles tournament play against Oregon players Karin Young/Ares Teixido Garcia. The Utes were defeated 6-2.
 
Hersh was able to claim the last Utah win of the day against Sheena Masuda from LBSU 6-3, 6-0. Horwood then went on to play Iowa's Anya Lamoreaux in singles. She lost the match 6-2, 6-4.
