Cameron Rising Named Davey O'Brien Award Semifinalist
FORT WORTH, Texas – University of Utah quarterback Cameron Rising has been named one of 21 semifinalist for the 2022 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award.
Rising, who is already a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award, joins four other quarterbacks from the Pac-12 with the league tying for the most honorees with the SEC. Three finalists will be announced on Tuesday, Nov. 29 based on committee and fan voting.
Fans can vote for Rising on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook with the top-five vote getters on each platform receiving bonus committee member ballots, which will be added to the votes cast by the National Selection Committee. To participate, fans must like the original Davey O'Brien Award post highlighting Rising on the three social media platforms.
Rising ranks fifth nationally in ESPN's QBR Rating (87.1) this season, going 181-of-273 passing for 2,225 yards and 19 touchdowns. He has also been effective using his legs, ranking second on the team in rushing yards (335) on 52 carries, averaging 6.4 yards per attempt with six rushing scores.
The Ventura, Calif., native ranks fourth in the Pac-12 and in the top-30 in the FBS in completion percentage (.663) this season. Through 23 career games at Utah, he has completed 64.7% of his passes (388-of-599), which ranks fourth all-time at Utah.
He is currently 22nd in the FBS and fifth in the Pac-12 in passing efficiency (154.8) and is 16th in the country in points responsible for per game (17.1). His six rushing touchdowns in 2022 ranks third among Pac-12 quarterbacks and is fourth-most among FBS quarterbacks as well.
His breakout game of the season came in Utah's 43-42 win over No. 7 USC, going 30-of-44 passing for 415 yards and two touchdowns, adding three rushing touchdowns (11 carries, 60 yards).
It was a career-high for Rising in completions (30), passing yards (415) and rushing touchdowns (3), accounting for 475 of Utah's 562 yards of total offense in the game. His 415 passing yards was the most by a Utah quarterback since 2005 and the most rushing touchdowns by a Ute QB since 2014.
Rising also had a career-high four passing touchdowns in Utah's win over San Diego State (18-of-30 passing for 224 yards) and a career-best 91 rushing yards at Florida (7 carries, 13.0 ypc).
Through nine games, he has completed 65% or higher of his passes in six games, including eclipsing the 70% mark three times (73.9% vs. Southern Utah, 17-of-23; 76% vs. Oregon State, 19-of-25; 71.9% at UCLA, 23-of-32).
