LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Utah Football defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley has been announced one of 51 nominees for the 2022 Broyles Award, given annually to college football's top assistant coaches.
The 51 nominees in this year's class were selected from approximately 1,500 assistant coaches representing 131 FBS programs across the country. A 43-member selection committee will select 15 semifinalists and then eventually narrow it down to five finalists.
Scalley, who was a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2019, is in his 15th year overall and his seventh as Utah's defensive coordinator. Scalley has developed the defensive identity that is known as R.S.N.B – standing for relentless, smart, nasty, ballhawks.
In 2022, Utah leads the Pac-12 and ranks 22nd nationally in total defense, holding opponents to just 372.9 yards of offense per game. It includes five performances holding opponents to under 270 yards with the Utes only allowing 20.0 points per game, which second in the Pac-12 and 21st in the FBS.
The Utes also lead the league this season in passing defense (206.5 yards allowed per game) with only two opponents having recorded more than one passing touchdown against Utah. There have been four games this season in which the Utes have not allowed a passing score at all, tying for the Pac-12 lead.
Utah's rushing defense ranks third in the Pac-12 (121.4 yards allowed per game), only allowing two teams to gain over 175 yards rushing this season. The Utes also rank first in the Pac-12 and eighth in the FBS in first downs allowed (159).
The Utes are currently sitting at No. 1 in the Pac-12 in both third and fourth down defense, ranking No. 20 and No. 10 in the FBS. The Utes have stopped eight of their opponents' last nine fourth-down attempts with the Utes ranking eighth in the FBS and first in the league in time of possession (33:46).
During his career at Utah, Scalley has coached nine All-Americans, 16 first-team all-conference selections and two Freshman All-Americans. He has sent 29 of his players to the NFL, including Devin Lloyd in 2022, the highest drafted linebacker (1st round, 27th overall) in program history.
