UCLA's Campbell, Jaquez Jr. Named to Wooden Award Watch List
LOS ANGELES – UCLA seniors Tyger Campbell and Jaime Jaquez Jr. have been named to the John R. Wooden Award's preseason top 50 watch list, as announced Tuesday.
The John R. Wooden Award honors the most outstanding men's and women's college basketball players each season. The UCLA men's basketball program has had two previous award winners – Marques Johnson with the first-ever Wooden Award in 1977 and Ed O'Bannon in 1995.
Campbell, a 5-foot-11 guard from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has played in 99 career games for UCLA, now in his fourth season on the court. Campbell has averaged 10.4 points, 4.9 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game in his collegiate career.
Jaquez Jr., a 6-foot-7 guard/forward from Camarillo, Calif., has competed in 100 career games for UCLA, now in his fourth season on the court. Jaquez Jr. has registered 11.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game in his career.
Both Campbell and Jaquez Jr. have each totaled at least 1,000 career points, wearing UCLA's uniform. Jaquez Jr. crossed the 1,000 career point threshold last season, while Campbell accomplished that feat in the Bruins' win over Long Beach State last Friday night.
UCLA is one of 10 programs in the nation to have at least two players named to the 50-person preseason watch list for this year's John R. Wooden Award. Duke, Kentucky and North Carolina have three players on the preseason list, while Baylor, Creighton, Gonzaga, Kansas, Miami, Texas and UCLA each have two student-athletes as preseason selections.
The No. 8-ranked UCLA men's basketball team has gone 3-0 this season, notching victories over Sacramento State (76-50), Long Beach State (93-69) and Norfolk State (86-56).
Campbell has averaged 14.3 points and 4.3 assists in three games, shooting 46.2 percent from the field. Jaquez Jr. has registered 12.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. He has shot 50.0 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from 3-point territory.
Kentucky's Oscar Tshiebwe won the 2022 John R. Wooden Award and is among the 50 student-athletes listed to this year's preseason watch list.
The Wooden Award's preseason watch list includes student-athletes from 14 conferences. Of the 50 players listed this fall, 38 of them are upperclassmen (and 24 of those student-athletes are seniors). Players who were not chosen to the preseason watch list are still eligible for the Wooden Award's midseason list, the late season list and the national ballot. The award's national ballot consists of 15 players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceeded the qualifications of the Wooden Award.
UCLA will return to action in the Continental Tire Main Event against No. 19-ranked Illinois (3-0) this Friday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The Bruins are scheduled to play two games in Las Vegas. UCLA will take on either Baylor or Virginia in either the championship match or the consolation game of the Continental Tire Main Event this Sunday at T-Mobile Arena. Sunday's game time is either 12 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. (depending upon the results of games played Friday).
