USC’s Massimo Di Martire Named MPSF Newcomer of the Year

Nov 16, 2022

USC grad student Massimo Di Martire becomes the fourth Trojan to be named MPSF Newcomer of the Year as he headlines a group of seven Trojans on the 2022 All-MPSF awards list — the most for USC since 2018. Redshirt seniors Jake Ehrhardt and Ashworth Molthen have both landed their second career selections to the All-MPSF First Team, while Di Martire and fellow grad student Kyle McKenney are on the All-MPSF Second Team. A third round of MPSF honors also go to All-MPSF Honorable Mention recipient Carson Kranz, who is joined by first-time honorees Luka Brnetic and Marcus Longton on the Honorable Mention slate.

USC's top scorer this season, MPSF Newcomer of the Year Massimo Di Martire has drummed up 50 goals as the Trojans head into hosting this week's MPSF Tournament (Nov. 18-20) at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. A four-time MPSF Newcomer of the Week winner, Di Martire also was named to the Cutino Award Watch List for his work with USC this year. He has scored in 19 games so far, with 14 multiple-goal efforts, including  a six-goal outburst vs. Long Beach State. He also has picked up a spot on the All-MPSF Second Team in his first season as a Trojan. Di Martire follows in the footsteps of three other Trojans to be named MPSF Newcomer of the Year: Joel Dennerley (2008), Matt Maier (2016) and Hannes Daube (2018).

Super senior Jake Ehrhardt has pocketed his fourth All-MPSF honor in five seasons of work in picking up a spot on the 2022 All-MPSF First Team. USC's second leading scorer this season with 42 goals, the captain has also climbed the career scoring ladder to currently rank No. 8 all-time at USC with 166 career goals to date. Another Trojan on the Cutino Award Watch List, Ehrhardt is now a two-time First Team honoree (2022 and 2020) with a pair of Second Team selections (2021 and 2019).

Redshirt senior Ashworth Molthen is now a three-time All-MPSF honoree as he adds 2022 All-MPSF First Team accolades to the same honor he earned in 2019 while at UCLA. The savvy lefty also was an All-MPSF Second Team pick last season as a Trojan. Also on the Cutino Award Watch List, Molthen has punched up 39 goals this season, striking in 18 different games with a team-best 15 multiple-goal outings.

Also weighing in with a third round of All-MPSF honors is junior Carson Kranz, who has secured his third straight All-MPSF Honorable Mention award thanks to another strong showing for the Trojans this season. Kranz has knocked in 16 goals this year to bump his career total up to 60 as a Trojan entering the 2022 postseason.

The other three Trojans on the All-MPSF honor roll are first-time honorees. For his standout efforts in the cage, goalie and grad student Kyle McKenney has earned a spot on the All-MPSF Second Team. Averaging 8.6 saves per game in his 15 appearances for the Trojans this year, McKenney has notched three games with double-digit saves. Senior Marcus Longton also wraps his USC playing career with his first All-MPSF accolades as he has scored All-MPSF Honorable Mention. A captain, the lefty has laced in 28 goals this season, striking in 19 of USC's 21 games so far while tallying eight multiple-goal outings while running his career count up to 87 goals entering postseason play. A sophomore, Luka Brnetic has impressed in his second season at USC, scoring 14 goals and coming up big for the Trojans in order to earn himself All-MPSF Honorable Mention.

The seven Trojans and their teammates are on their way to defend home waters this weekend as hosts of the 202 MPSF Tournament, which runs Nov. 18-20 at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
