The nation's top teams will converge on USC's Uytengsu Aquatic Center this weekend for the 2022 MPSF Championships. The No. 1 Bears earned the top seed in the tournament after capturing the regular season title with a 3-0 conference record for the second consecutive season. The winner of the tournament will earn the conference's automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Championship, which will be hosted by Cal on Dec. 3-4 at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Cal will open the tournament with a first-round matchup against Penn State Behrend on Friday.

BEAR NECESSITIES

BEARS TAKE TOP MPSF HONORS
For the third straight year, center Nikolaos Papanikolaou has been named MPSF Player of the Year and Kirk Everist has been named MPSF Coach of the Year. Everist becomes the first coach in conference history to be named Coach of the Year for three straight seasons while Papanikolaou joins Stanford's Tony Azevedo (2001-04) as the only players to capture MPSF Player of the Year honors for three consecutive years.

CAL PLACES SEVEN ON ALL-MPSF TEAM
Nikolaos Papanikolaou is one of seven Cal players to earn 2022 All-MPSF honors, including a conference- high four on the First Team. In addition to Papanikolaou, senior attacker Jack Deely, junior goalie Adrian Weinberg and sophomore attacker Max Casabella were placed on the First Team while sophomore Roberto Valera took Second Team recognition. Senior Marko Valecic and junior Warren Loth earned honorable mention.

MIRKOVIC NAMED MPSF NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
Freshman attacker Nik Mirkovic was named MPSF Newcomer of the Week on Monday after playing a key role in Cal's 18-12 victory over No. 4 Stanford in the annual Big Splash. Mirkovic registered two goals and a steal along with one earned exclusion for his first career MPSF weekly honor. It was the second week in a row a Cal player earned MPSF Newcomer of the Week honors after Albert Ponferrada took the award last week.

PAPA APPROACHING HISTORY
With 198 career goals heading into this weekend's MPSF Championships, Papanikolaou needs two more to become the sixth player in Cal history to score 200 career goals, joining Chris Humbert (296), Johnny Hooper (245), Ivan Rackov (235), John Mann (218) and Kirk Everist (205). Papanikolaou currently ranks fifth in the MPSF with 50 goals after winning the conference scoring championship last year with 68 goals. The three-time All-American also leads the conference with 63 earned exclusions.

CAL TO HOST 2022 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
Cal's Spieker Aquatics Complex will host the 2022 NCAA Championship on Dec. 3-4, with a possible play- in game on Dec. 1. The Bears last hosted the NCAA Championship in 2016, when they defeated USC in overtime in the national championship game. The NCAA bracket will be announced Sunday evening and tickets go on sale Monday morning at 9 a.m. PT.

EVERIST HITS BENCHMARK
Cal head coach Kirk Everist reached a milestone last season when he notched his 400th career win in the Bears' 11-9 victory over San Jose State. Now in his 21st season, Everist features an overall record of 432-128 (.771) while leading the Golden Bears to four national championships, including the 2021 crown. Everist was named MPSF Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career earlier this week and won his third career ACWPC National Coach of the Year award last season.
