No. 1 Bears Take Third Place At MPSF Championships
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 1 California men's water polo team held off No. 2 UCLA, defeating the Bruins 7-6 to finish in third place at the 2022 MPSF Championships Sunday at USC's Uytengsu Aquatic Center.
It was a defensive battle as both teams scored their fewest goals of the season. Junior goalkeeper Adrian Weinberg collected eight saves on the day, and the Cal defense combined for five field blocks and eight steals. Junior Warren Loth had two blocks and three steals in addition to a goal.
Freshman Albert Ponferrada would open and close the game for the Bears, getting Cal on the scoreboard first in the first quarter and scoring his third goal of the day late in the fourth quarter to break the then 6-6 tie. Ponferrada also had two assists for five points in the game.
Cal kept the ball moving well with every goal of the game coming off of an assist.
The Bears now turn their focus to preparing for the 2022 NCAA Championship which will take place at Cal's Spieker Aquatic Complex on Dec. 3-4, with a possible play-in game on Dec. 1. The NCAA bracket will be announced this evening and tickets go on sale tomorrow at 9 a.m. PT.
