SEATTLE – Washington women's basketball is off to a hot start to the season. The Huskies defeated Idaho State (1-3) 56-39 Sunday night at Alaska Airlines Arena to improve to 4-0.
Washington kept their pace and composure in a physical game, and the defense once again proved to be tough.
The Huskies held Idaho State to 32% from the field (25% in the first half) and forced 18 turnovers. With eight points and 11 steals, Washington never let up, holding Idaho State to well under their season average of points per game (52).
Offensively, four Huskies scored in double digits. Dalayah Daniels led all scorers with 12 points, while Haley Van Dyke (10 points), Hannah Stines (10), and Elle Ladine (10) all were solid contributors. Ladine added six rebounds, which was also a new career high.
Stines and Ladine combined for 20 points in the 30 total points off the bench for Washington, and in their first double-digit games in college, showed how fun the freshmen – and the entire team – are to watch.
"We want to be a team that can go deep into our bench, and I think that was a positive for us tonight," head coach Tina Langley said. "I'm really excited to use our bench, and I thought they did a great job not only giving us a spark on the offensive end, but also defensively they stepped right in conceptually and did a great job."
Other notable performances came from Jayda Noble and Emma Grothaus. Noble tied her career record set last game with four steals, and added seven rebounds to the stats sheet. The team found Grothaus in the second half, where she put up eight points. Grothaus also added two steals, a block, and four rebounds to the night.
Washington shot 59% in the fourth quarter and kept up their tough defense to seal the win.
Next Up: Washington travels to Las Vegas, Nev. for the Las Vegas Holiday Classic, where they will take on Fordham (Friday, Nov. 25) and Santa Clara (Saturday, Nov. 26) in the first road contests of the season.
