Cambridge Jr., Nunez Sweep Pac-12 MBB Player of the Week Honors

Nov 21, 2022

SAN FRANCISCO - Sun Devil Men's Basketball swept the weekly conference awards, as the Pac-12 announced their player of the week winners on Monday afternoon.

Desmond Cambridge Jr. was named Pac-12 Player of the Week following an incredible week at the Legends Classic. Austin Nunez received Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors after providing a spark off the bench in two wins. Arizona State won the Legends Classic Championship thanks to victories over VCU and No. 20 Michigan.

It is the 11th and 12th time a Sun Devil has won a Pac-12 Player of the Week award under Bobby Hurley. Cambridge Jr. is the first winner of Pac-12 Player of the Week from Arizona State since Feb. 17, 2020. Nunez becomes the first Sun Devil to claim Pac-12 Freshman of the Week since Josh Christopher on Nov. 30, 2020.

Desmond Cambridge Jr. - Pac-12 Player of the Week
Desmond Cambridge Jr. found his shooting stroke, taking over New York City while leading the Sun Devils to a 2-0 record and Championship at the 2022 Legends Classic. Cambridge Jr. was named Legends Classic MVP after averaging 15.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.5 steals in only 23.0 minutes per game all while shooting 11/22 (50%) from the field. The Sun Devils needed all ten of his points in the 63-59 victory over VCU, including a critical conversion of an and-one opportunity to put the Sun Devils up 61-59 with under a minute left. Cambridge Jr. put on a show in the 87-65 victory over No. 20 Michigan, scoring a game-high 20 points on 6/12 shooting in only 27 minutes. He was extremely efficient and scored in a variety of ways, hitting 4/8 three pointers and 4/4 free throws. In both games, Cambridge Jr. was tasked with guarding the other team's top perimeter scorer (Jett Howard, Zeb Jackson). He not only limited his matchup to only 15 points on 35% shooting over two games, he also added three steals.

Austin Nunez - Pac-12 Freshman of the Week
Freshman guard Austin Nunez was unfazed by the big stage, helping the Sun Devils go 2-0 and win the 2022 Legends Classic at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. In victories over VCU and No. 20 Michigan, Nunez was spectacular off the bench, averaging 12.5 points in 23.0 minutes per game while shooting 10/17 (59%) from the field and 5/7 (71%) from three. His contributions were vital in the 63-59 victory over VCU, as he scored 10 points, including making his only two three-point attempts. One of those threes tied the contest at 56 as a part of a game-sealing 22-7 run over the final nine minutes. Nunez was a spark off the bench in the 87-65 dominant victory over No. 20 Michigan on Thursday, as he enjoyed his best game as a Sun Devil. He poured in a career-high 15 points on 6/10 shooting, making 3/5 from beyond the arc. Because of his efforts, he was one of five individuals named to the 2022 Legends Classic All-Tournament Team.
