Robinson's 25 Kills Not Enough As Utah Volleyball Falls At Arizona State

Nov 23, 2022

TEMPE, Ariz. – Utah Volleyball's Madelyn Robinson recorded a match-high 25 kills on Wednesday afternoon, however, it was not enough to escape Tempe with a victory as the Utes fell to Arizona State in four sets (24-26, 18-25, 25-22, 17-25) at the Desert Financial Arena. The match marked Robinson's sixth match of 20 or more kills this season.

Also on Wednesday, Vanessa Ramirez posted 17 digs to reach 1,012 career digs and become the 13th player in program history to join the 1,000 career digs club. The 17 digs by Ramirez was a match high and her 26th match of double-digit digs this season.

The Sun Devils pulled away in the first set after a 5-1 run, which left the Utes trailing 12-6. Utah responded by scoring eight of the next 10 points to tie the opening set 14-14. From that point on, Utah trailed by one to two points but managed to tie the set each time that Arizona State would pull away.

Consecutive kills from Madelyn Robinson tied the score 23-23, while a Sun Devil attack error would give the Utes set point. Out of a timeout, Arizona State was able to record consecutive kills to earn a set point of its own before a Ute attack error handed ASU the 26-24 win. Robinson posted six kills, while KJ Burgess added four kills as Utah hit a combined .303 hitting percentage. ASU matched the offensive efforts with a .318 clip in the opening set.

There was little separation to begin the second set as both teams limited large spurts of points. The Sun Devils struck first after a 5-1 run set Utah back 20-15 late in the frame. The Utes could only trim the lead to four points before Arizona State finished the set with a 3-0 run to win 25-18 and take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Sun Devils continued the hot-hitting at a .387 clip, while the Utes hit just .176 in the second set.

Utah gained momentum at the start of the third set, using a 6-0 run to pull ahead 8-4. ASU pulled within two points later on, but Utah held off the home team and pushed the lead back out to four points (14-10) after a kill from Burgess. Later leading 20-16, Utah allowed a 3-0 run from Arizona State cut the lead to just one point, but consecutive kills from Robinson forced the Sun Devils to call timeout trailing 22-19. The teams went point for point with Utah eventually taking the 25-22 win. Robinson posted eight kills in the set to lead the offense as she had done all match.

Utah fell behind early in the fourth set and used a 4-1 run to tie the score 9-9 and limit the damage. The Arizona State offense, along with strong blocking efforts, managed to gain a 18-12 lead over Utah. Allie Olsen earned a much-needed sideout, but another 4-1 run from the Sun Devils extended the lead to 22-14 and eventually would win the frame 25-17 to end the match.

Along with Robinson's 25 kills, Utah collected nine kills on .429 hitting from Burgess and seven kills on .538 hitting from Olsen. Kamry Bailey and Megan Yett each posted 12 digs to join Ramirez in double figures, while Emily Smith dished out 26 assists and Grace Hammond added 21 assists.

Utah closes out the 2022 regular season with a match at Colorado this Friday, Nov. 25, at 3 p.m. MT. The Utes and Buffaloes will play at CU Events Center and will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
