USC Women's Volleyball Falls to Ohio State in NCAA Second Round

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The sixth-seeded USC women's volleyball team (22-11) was defeated in three sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-16) by third-seeded and 10th-ranked Ohio State (21-9) in the second round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament at Covelli Center on Saturday, Dec. 3. The Buckeyes advance to the Texas regional semifinal round.
 
KEY PLAYERS

  • Sr. OH Skylar Fields led the Trojans with 14 kills (5e, 40att, .225) and had five digs, two blocks, and two service aces. It was her 30th match in double-digit kills this season. Fields finishes the season with 598 kills, the third most by a Trojan in a single season. Her 650.0 points are also third all-time among the Trojans' single-season records.
  • Fr. OH Jordan Wilson tallied 10 kills (4e, 22att) and hit .273 to go with one dig.
  • Fr. LIB Gala Trubint led the Trojans with nine digs and had an assist.
  • So. setter Mia Tuaniga made her return to the court after missing the last two matches and put up 15 assists with four digs, one kill, and one service ace.
  • For Ohio State, Emily Londot had 13 kills (4e, 29att, .310) with seven digs. Jenaisya Moore scored 10 kills (2e, 17att, .471) to go with three digs. Gabby Gonzales had nine kills (1e, 19att, .421) with nine digs and two blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • USC led by three (17-14) in the first set, but Ohio State ended on an 11-4 run to close out a 25-21 win. Fields had five kills and Wilson added four in the opening frame. The Trojans hit .310 and added a pair of blocks, but the Buckeyes finished with a .417 hitting percentage and had four blocks and four aces to go ahead, 1-0.
  • Wilson had four kills to lead USC in set two. Fields added three more and Tuaniga entered the match for the first time to put up three assists, but Ohio State stayed hot to get a 25-17 win for a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .286 with six kills from Londot and four from Moore.
  • The Buckeyes grabbed an early lead in the third and had forced the Trojans to use both timeouts by the time OSU led by 10 at 16-6. The Trojans fought back and got six kills from Fields and two each from Wilson and Weske, but it wasn't enough to close the gap as Ohio State completed a 25-16 win for the sweep. 

MATCH NOTES

  • USC fell to 4-2 all-time against Ohio State. The Trojans had won the previous three meetings.
  • The Trojans go to 82-35 all-time in the NCAA tournament and 128-42 in all-time postseason matches.
  • The Women of Troy fell to 5-1 all-time in the state of Ohio (3-1 in Columbus).
