2022-23 Pac-12 Bowl Season

Following Pac-12 teams competing
in postseason bowl games

What you need to know when Oregon State and Washington State begin bowl season on Saturday

Dec 16, 2022

It's bowl season! After having six teams in the final College Football Playoff rankings, the Pac-12 will be playing in some of the biggest games in the postseason. Seven Pac-12 schools will face teams from the SEC, ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, AAC and the Mountain West for ultimate bragging rights.

Here is what you need to know from the first two bowl games, which are taking place early on Saturday, Dec. 17.

SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl

No. 14 Oregon State (9-3) vs. Florida (6-6)

  • When: Sat., Dec. 17, 11:30 a.m. PT / 12:30 p.m. MT
  • Where: Las Vegas, NV (Allegiant Stadium)
  • How to Watch: ESPN

Oregon State season brief: Pac-12 Co-Coach of the Year Jonathan Smith continued his reclamation program of the Beaver program. Oregon State handled its business against Boise State, Fresno State and Montana State to start 3-0. In conference play, the Beavers had thrilling wins against Stanford and Oregon, while adding two-score victories over Washington State, Cal, Colorado and Arizona State. The three Beaver losses showcased how talented they are as well. Washington and USC needed last-minute scores to win, while Oregon State hung with Utah on the road in the first half with a backup quarterback.

Florida season brief: The Gators had a rollercoaster of a season after starting the year off with a win against Utah. They started 2-2 before going on a streak of two-game winning and losing streaks the rest of the season. In Florida's six losses, the team allowed an average of 38 points per game. The offense also had days were it couldn't get started either. When things went well for the Gators, their rushing attack of quarterback Anthony Richardson (who has declared for the NFL Draft and won't play in this game) and running backs Montrell Johnson Jr. and Trevor Etienne was leading the charge. After beating Utah, Florida went winless against the four other ranked opponents it faced.

Why you should tune in: 2006. That was the last time Oregon State won 10 games. The Beavers have only done it two other times, including 2000 when they won the Fiesta Bowl with Smith at quarterback. Reaching double-digit wins as the head coach would be another major feat for Smith.

Why Oregon State could win: A Beaver offense that rushes for nearly 200 yards per game will be facing a Gator defense that allows 176.2 rushing yards per game, meaning it could be a big day for Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year Damien Martinez. Also: Richardson and a handful of Gators won't be playing in this contest, forcing Florida to break in a brand new quarterback against the Beavers' experienced secondary.

Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl presented by Stifel

Washington State (7-5) vs. Fresno State (9-4)

  • When: Sat., Dec. 17, 12:30 p.m. PT / 1:30 p.m. MT
  • Where: Los Angeles, CA (SoFi Stadium)
  • How to Watch: ABC

Washington State season brief: The Cougars took care of business in their non-conference slate beating Idaho and Colorado State as well as upsetting then-ranked No. 19 Wisconsin in Madison. After a slow start to conference play, the Cougs won three of their last four conference games to earn bowl eligibility. In Washington State's seven wins, they averaged over 31 points per game. The Cougs boast the Pac-12's third-best scoring defense, allowing just 22.4 points per game.

Fresno State season brief: The Bulldogs started with 1-4 with losses to Oregon State and USC. However, Fresno State has won eight straight games, including the Mountain West Championship Game in a rematch against Boise State, which beat the Bulldogs by 20 in early October. Fresno State QB Jake Haener has been stellar the past two seasons, throwing for 51 touchdowns.

Why you should tune in: Haener and WSU's Cameron Ward are two of the most dynamic QBs in the nation. This one could certainly be a shootout.

Why Washington State could win: The Cougars' five losses this season have come against teams currently ranked No. 15 or higher. They don't have a bad loss and are battled-tested. Fresno State has allowed 126.2 rushing yards per game, while the Cougars have rushed for nearly 700 yards the last four games.
