Cal Completes Day 2 In Honolulu

HONOLULU – Cal women's tennis senior Haley Giavara defeated USC's 83rd-ranked Emma Charney on Friday as the Golden Bears continued play in the Weinman Foundation Invitational. The two-time singles All-American, who missed the fall half of the 2022-23 season due to injury, beat the Trojan, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4.
 
The Bears collected doubles victories from Erin Richardson and Makenna Thiel, who upended USC's Nathalie Rodilosso and Sloane Morra, 6-4, and from Cami Brown and Hannah Viller Moeller, who beat Anna Kern and Madison Kim of host Hawaii, 6-2.
 
Giavara paired with sophomore Katja Wiersholm in doubles, but the duo fell to Hawaii's Nikola Homolkova and Klara Novakova, 6-1. Giavara did pick up her first doubles win of the season on Thursday, when she paired with Hannah Viller Moeller to beat a Hawaii pair.
 
While she didn't play any matches during the fall part of the collegiate season, Giavara did compete for the United States in the Master'U BNP Paribas Championships in December in France. With Cal head coach Amanda Augustus on the U.S. staff, the United States defeated Germany, 5-2, France, 4-2, and, in the final, Great Britain, 4-2, to capture its 10th championship in the international tournament. Giavara went 3-0 in doubles for Team USA.
 
The Weinman Foundation Invitational concludes Saturday, with matches starting at 9 a.m. HST.
