Hockey Falls 5-2 to Alaska Fairbanks on the Road

Feb 4, 2023

FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- Despite a multi-point night by captain Josh Doan, the Arizona State ice hockey team (13-18-0) suffered a 5-2 loss and series sweep at the hands of Alaska Fairbanks (15-9-2) on Saturday night. The two teams meet again to complete the home-and-home series at Mullett Arena in Tempe on February 24-25.

With a goal and assist tonight, Doan has tallied five points in the past three games (2G, 3A). It's his sixth multi-point night of this season and 16th of his two-year collegiate career.

Teddy Lagerback initiated the game's scoring just two minutes and 25 seconds into the opening frame with ASU's second power play in as many games. He was assisted by Doan and graduate alternate captain Demetrios Koumontzis.

The Nanooks answered back quickly - scoring the game-tying goal three minutes after Lagerback. Alaska capitalized on the goal's momentum, scoring another at the seven minute mark to take the 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

Alaska extended its lead in the second period to push the score to 3-1 in favor of the Nanooks.

A goal by Doan at the start of the third period brought the Sun Devils within one at 3-2. But it wouldn't be enough to stall the Nanooks who scored another pair of goals to secure a 5-2 win and series sweep.

UP NEXT: ASU is off next weekend, February 10-11, and will resume play against Lindenwood at Mullett Arena on February 17-18. Friday's matchup against the Lions is Canada Night and tickets for both games are still available for purchase.
