Men's Basketball Takes Care of Business Against Cal

Feb 5, 2023

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team found themselves back in the win column on Sunday inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center behind a balanced attack to serve California the 61-46 loss.

The visiting team got off to a hot start early on, jumping out to a 15-9 lead on the Utes before Utah answered Cal with an 11-0 run led predominantly by Jaxon Brenchley – who scored eight-consecutive points during that stretch. Utah's defense then began to clamp down on the Golden Bears and finished the final 3:22 of the half with a 7-2 spport to lead Cal 29-24 at the break.

Utah (16-9, 9-5 Pac-120) came out of the gates firing on all cylinders in the second frame and went up 41-25 by the 14:08 media break. Utah's offense was much better from beyond the arc, knocking down six 3-pointers. The Utes separated themselves completely from the Golden Bears (3-20, 2-10 Pac-12) midway through the second half, hitting four-straight from the field to go ahead 55-35 – its largest lead of the game.

Lazar Stefanovic had another solid game starting in the place of Gabe Madsen, scoring a game-high 15 points while dishing out six assists. Branden Carlson picked up his third double-double of the year with 12 points and 13 rebounds to go with four blocks while Ben Carlson hit double-figures for the first time since Dec. 1 against then-No. 4/4 Arizona with 11 points on five rebounds. Providence, Utah, native Jaxon Brenchley was locked in and ready when his number was called, giving the Runnin' Utes a spark off the bench to finish with a season-high 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting with three offensive boards and a pair of steals.

BY THE NUMBERS
Sunday's victory completed the in-season sweep of Cal for the second-consecutive year … the last time Utah had back-to-back games with double-digit 3-pointers made was last season against Manhattan (10) at home and Missouri (10) on the road while the last time the Utes have done it in a league game was during the 2018-19 season against USC (11) and UCLA (17) … Utah is now 2-6 this season when shooting under 40-percent in a game.

UP NEXT
Utah closes out its three-game homestand next Saturday, Feb. 11, for an 8 p.m. (MT) tip-off on FS1 against Colorado for the first time this season.
