ASU sweeps day one of the 2023 Pac-12 Men's Swimming Championships

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – With USC leading the way after the conclusion of the Men’s Diving Championships last weekend, the road to crowning a Pac-12 Men’s Swimming & Diving Champion picked back up in Federal Way Wednesday night. 

The No.1 Arizona State Sun Devils swept day one, picking up the 200 Medley and 800 Free relays with standout sophomore Leon Marchand going two-for-two, swimming in both relays. 

Arizona, Utah, Cal and Stanford all picked up their first podium finishes in the Men’s Swimming Championship, shifting the combined rankings at the end of the night. 

200 Medley Relay 

  • The Sun Devils picked up the first win of the 2023 Men’s Pac-12 Swimming Championships, taking the 200 Medley Relay by two seconds. 
  • Jack Dolan, Leon Marchand, Max McCusker and Jonny Kulow swam a 1:21.69, setting a new Pac-12 Championship record and tying Cal’s overall Pac-12 record set in 2022.
  • Alongside tying the record, the swimmers swam their fastest time of the season and set a new Sun Devil program record.
  • Due to two disqualifications, Arizona slid into second place, with Billy Oates, Ryan Foote, Seth Miller and Marin Ercegovic swimming a time of 1:23.74, a season-best. 
  • Moving into third was Utah, swimming a 1:24.25. Andrei Ungur, Jaek Horner, Ryan Garstang and Finn O’Haimhirgin earned a season's best for the Utes and their first spot on the podium in the Men’s Swimming Championship.

800 Freestyle Relay

  • The Sun Devils swept the night after taking their second win in the form of the 800 Free Relay. 
  • Leon Machand, Grant House, Patrick Sammon and Julian Hill’s time of 6:06.30 set a new Pac-12 Championship record, a new overall Pac-12 record, a new Sun Devil program record and a new 2023 NCAA-best. 
  • Three seconds behind the winner was Cal, with Patrick Callan, Gabriel Jett, Robin Hanson and Destin Lasco finishing second with a time of 6:11.08.
  • In third with their first podium finish of the Championship was Stanford's Luke Maurer, Ron Polonsky, Andres Dupont and Preston Forst, swimming a 6:11.08.
