Bears Host Gaels For Midweek Clash

Cal will host East Bay rival Saint Mary's for a nonconference contest Tuesday night at Stu Gordon Stadium.

BERKELEY – The California baseball team wraps up a four-game homestand on Tuesday when Saint Mary's comes to Stu Gordon Stadium for a nonconference showdown. The Golden Bears and Gaels are scheduled for a 6:05 p.m. first pitch and the contest will be streamed live.
 
Cal enters this week with a 9-8 overall record after falling to USC in two of three over the weekend. The Bears got a walk-off win in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, before falling to the Trojans 6-3 in the finale. Saint Mary's (6-11) is coming off a conference loss at the hands of Santa Clara, splitting Saturday's doubleheader.

  • The Bears are 5-2 at Stu Gordon Stadium this season. They saw their 10-game home winning streak snapped with a 5-3 loss to USC on Friday. Under Mike Neu, the Bears are 79-47 (.627) at home.  
  • Sophomore catcher Caleb Lomavita continues to lead the team in batting average, hitting .324. Over his last five games, he's hitting .348 (8-for-23) with a double and two home runs.
  • Christian Becerra made his first collegiate start on the mound against the Trojans on Friday and tossed three scoreless innings.
  • Cal's pitching staff remains one of the top units in the nation in walks allowed per nine innings. The Bears allow just 3.3 walks per nine, which ranks 26th nationally.
  • Connor Sullivan leads the Pac-12 in two impressive pitching statistics. He boasts an 8.0 strikeout-to-walk ratio and allows just 0.92 walks per nine innings, ranking 24th and 10th in the nation, respectively.
  • Power numbers: Cal clubbed five home runs over the weekend, with four coming in the win over the Trojans in game one on Saturday. Caleb Lomavita smashed two home runs, including a walk-off shot in the 10th inning. Lomavita and Rodney Green Jr. are tied for the team lead with five home runs on the year, which is tied for ninth most in the Pac-12.
  • Joe Williams had an impressive weekend coming out of the bullpen for the Bears. He made two appearances, pitching three complete frames with just one hit and one walk allowed while striking out four.

 
SERIES HISTORY

  • Tuesday will be the 190th meeting of all time between the Bears and Gaels. Cal owns a 127-62 advantage in the series. Last season, the two teams split the two-game series with the visiting team winning both contests. Last time out, Cal defeated SMC 6-0 at Louis Guisto Field on April 11, 2022.

 
UP NEXT
Cal turns its attention back to the Pac-12 for a three-game series in the Pacific Northwest. The Bears will take on Oregon State in Corvallis starting Friday evening at 5:35. All three games this weekend will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
