Jared McAlvey named Pac-12 Athlete of the Week

Mar 21, 2023

SAN FRANCISCO – Washington State track and field junior Jared McAlvey was named Pac-12 men's track athlete of the week as announced by the league office Tuesday. The first-career weekly conference accolade for the junior hurdler comes on the heels of McAlvey clocking the fastest 400m hurdles time (50.90) in the nation to win the event this past Saturday in Phoenix at the GCU Invitational.

McAlvey is the just the second Cougar to earn Pac-12 Athlete of the Week honors since 2018, and he is the first since Micaela De Mello was named women's track athlete of the week in the opening week of the 2022 outdoor season. His personal-best 50.90 in Saturday's 400m hurdles, which gave him the first-place finish in a field of 19 competitors, was a GCU Invitational meet record and nearly a half-second improvement over his previous lifetime best (51.59).

A native of Walla Walla, Wash., McAlvey had a career-best seventh-place finish at the 2022 Pac-12 Championships in the men's 400m hurdles (51.79) and qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary Round where he finished 40th in 52.75.

The Cougars return to the Pacific Northwest this Thursday and Friday to compete in the Buc Scoring Invite in Spokane, Wash., at Puryear Field/ Boppell Track at Whitworth Pine Bowl.
