Eighth Place Finish

Mar 25, 2023

MINNEAPOLIS - Stanford closed out the NCAA Championships with an eighth place finish and 143.5 points on Saturday night. Six student-athletes competed in the finals session, as Aaron Sequeira represented the Card in the 200 back, Ethan Foster competed on the platform, and four swimmers suited up for the 400 free relay.

Stanford's team result marks the second-best finish during the Goldman Family Director of Men's Swimming and Diving Dan Schemmel's tenure, just a spot behind last year's seventh place result.

Aaron Sequeira claimed his second career All-America honor after earning one earlier during the championships in the 100 fly. This time, in the 200 back, Sequeira finished sixth in the consolation final with a time of 1:40.66.

In prelims, Sequeira swam a 1:39.91, only the fifth time a Stanford swimmer has gone under the 1:40 mark in the 200 back.

On the platform, Ethan Foster finished in the consolation final in third place, scoring 376.50 points while earning his first career All-America honor. He advanced to the final round after taking 10th in prelims and recording a score of 358.80.

Stanford closed out the session and the meet with the 400 free relay and a podium finish. Andrei Minakov, Ron Polonsky, Luke Maurer, and Andres Dupont suited up for the Cardinal, swimming a 2:47.61 and taking eighth place.

In prelims, Stanford had 12 performances across the six events. Leon MacAlister and Josh Zuchowski joined Sequeira in the 200 back, finishing 21st and 27th respectively.

Luke Maurer, Andrei Minakov, Andres Dupont, and Rafael Gu represented Stanford in the 100 free. Maurer was the top finisher in 31st, while Minakov took 34th, Dupont finished in 37th, and Gu took 47th.

Ron Polonsky was the lone Cardinal in the 200 breast, taking 36th overall in the event. The 200 fly saw Rick Mihm and Preston Forst compete, coming in 31st and 40th overall.

Gabe Machado competed for the Cardinal in the 1,650 free where he finished 27th overall.

This concludes the 2023 season for Stanford Men's Swimming and Diving.
