Amari Avery Advances To Augusta National Women's Amateur Final

Mar 30, 2023
Amari Avery advanced to her second straight Augusta National Women's Amateur final round.

Sophomore Amari Avery closed with a pair of birdies on her final two holes on 8 and 9 to card a 1-under 71 to join a tie for 28th and make the 36-hole cut on Thursday (March 30) after the second round of the 2023 Augusta National Women's Amateur at Champions Retreat.

The birdie-birdie finish earned Avery her second straight final round at Augusta National on Saturday (April 1) as she will vie for her second straight top 10 finish.

Incoming freshman Bailey Shoemaker did not make the cut, finishing at 10-over.

Avery was in danger of missing the cut as well after a bogey on 7 moved her to 4-over. But she was able to birdie the par 3 8th and the par 5 9th to secure her spot in Saturday's play.

"I knew I was on the cut line pretty much all day." Avery said. "I was playing really well so I kind of expected I would go up a little bit, but just didn't go that way. When I bogeyed 7 nerves struck in, but I was also getting down on myself. I was like, I'm playing so well and the scores don't show. I was able to push through and just give it my all and it worked out."

Said Avery on the stakes of even just making the cut: "Yeah, I think that's where I had to change my mentality a little bit. I came into the week with of course high expectations, but you never know how it's going to go. Being a top player I expected to be in the Top 5 going into Saturday.

"Can't really expect those kind of things here. Champions Retreat is a tough golf course and challenging mentally and physically. I mean, getting to Augusta or even just getting here and getting to go play in this event, you have to take pride in that. Of course just making the cut, that's always great."

Ahead of Saturday's final, all 72 competitors will play a practice round on Friday at Augusta National.
