USC Baseball Tosses Second Straight Shutout in Dominant 10-0 Win Over Utah

Apr 1, 2023

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- Four pitchers combined to throw a second straight shutout for the USC baseball team as the Trojans blanked Utah 10-0.

Sophomore Caden Aoki (1-0) started and picked up the win for USC (16-9-1, 9-2), going five shutout innings while giving up four hits, walking none, and striking out three. Sophomore Josh Blum was dealing out of the bullpen as well, going two shutout innings, allowing one hit, walking none and striking out three.

Offensively, the Trojans were led by freshman Luca DiPaolo, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a home run, a walk and three RBI. It was the first homer of DiPaolo's career. Senior Johnny Olmstead compiled a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Freshman Austin Overn also made his presence felt, hitting his 10th triple of the year to tie the USC single season record set back in 2007 by Grant Green. Overn had two hits on the day.

It was the first time since 2018 that USC has tossed back-to-back shutouts. The Trojans also tossed consecutive shutouts against Utah in 2018.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Trojans took the lead for good in the fourth, scoring for the first time in the inning. USC's offense started clicking and put up six runs, including a two-run double off the bat of senior Connor Aoki and a two-run home run from Olmstead.
