The 2023 Pac-12 Women’s Lacrosse Tournament gets underway this week, with a pair of contests kicking things off on Wednesday, May 3 from California Memorial Stadium. All five games of the tournament are set to air on Pac-12 Network, with Troy Clardy and Kara Lentz on the broadcast. Bracket information is available here.
 
The 2023 Pac-12 women’s lacrosse postseason awards were announced this week. Colorado’s Charlie Rudy was selected as Attacker of the Year, while USC’s Claudia Shevitz, Emma Wightman and Kait Devir earned Midfielder, Defensive Player and Co-Goalkeeper of the Year honors, respectively. Stanford’s Annabel Frist was named the first-ever Draw Specialist of the Year, while teammate Kara Rahaim was selected Co-Goalkeeper of the Year. Arizona State’s Teagan Ng was named Freshman of the Year and USC’s Lindsey Munday was voted Coach of the Year.
 
This Week 
  • No. 4-seed Arizona State faces off against No. 5-seed California at 4:30 p.m. PT / 5:30 p.m. MT on Wednesday.
    • The Sun Devils swept the regular season series, holding the Golden Bears to under 10 goals in both. Goalkeeper Katie Vahle posted a .661 save percentage in the two contests.
    • Maya Lawliss recorded one of her six hat tricks on the year in the first showdown and had seven shots on goal.
  • No. 3-seed Colorado battles No. 6-seed Oregon at 7 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. MT in the second matchup in five days between the two teams.
    • The Buffaloes are riding a two-game win streak into the Tournament, including a 15-5 win in the regular season finale against Oregon. 
    • Colorado and Oregon faced off in last year’s quarterfinal, with Colorado winning 14-10.
  • Regular season champion and No. 1-seed USC makes its tournament debut against the winner of Arizona State versus California on Thursday, May 4 at 4:30 p.m. PT / 5:30 p.m. MT.
    • The Trojans, who are ranked No. 17 in the country, won their second Pac-12 title this year after only one conference loss. USC went a perfect 8-0 at home, the fourth time they’ve accomplished the feat.
  • No. 2-seed Stanford will take on the winner of Colorado versus Oregon on Thursday at 7 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. MT.
    • The Cardinal gets a first-round bye for the third consecutive time, and are eyeing its fourth Pac-12 Tournament crown. Stanford won three-straight games to wrap up the regular season, outsourcing its opponents 52-30 over that stretch.
Last Week
  • USC clinched the outright regular-season crown with an 11-6 win against Arizona State.
    • Devir allowed just six goals and made eight saves, a performance which secured Defensive Player of the Week honors.
    • Kaylon Buckner found the back of the net twice, and heads into postseason play leading the Sun Devils with 33 goals.
  • Stanford won its 22nd straight against California in an 18-8 decision.
    • Ashley Humphrey scored four goals and added three assists to win the Offensive Player of the Week award.
    • The Golden Bears came out to a 2-0 lead behind goals from Lawliss and Amanda Morse. Riley Drullinger made a career-best 19 saves.
  • Colorado defeated Oregon, 15-5.
    • Colorado allowed just 13 shots on goal in a stifling defensive effort, and got three goals from Sam McGee.
    • Margot Hotham caused three turnovers last Friday, extending her streak to six straight.
Notes and Numbers
  • USC comes in at No. 17 in the latest IWLCA poll, and Stanford is receiving votes. USC’s ranking is a season-best for the Trojans.
  • Stanford leads the way at No. 25 in the RPI, followed by No. 27 USC, No. 53 Colorado, No. 82 Arizona State, No. 98 Oregon and No. 105 California.
  • The host institutions in each of the last two Pac-12 Tournaments (2022: Arizona State, 2021: Stanford) have reached the Championship in their respective years.
  • USC has the fifth-best scoring defense in Division I, allowing just 8.18 goals per game. The Trojans have allowed eight or fewer goals in 11 contests this season.
    • Goalkeeper Devir is allowing just 7.77 goals per game, which is the fourth-lowest in the country.
  • The Sun Devils continue to clear the ball at a strong rate, ranking second in the NCAA at .935 percent. 
  • A year after breaking the NCAA assists record, Stanford’s Humphrey posted 40 this season and is the NCAA’s active career leader in assists per game with 3.56.
    • The redshirt sophomore is also second in points per game with 5.47.
  • Oregon’s Lauren Rismani has multiple points in six of her last seven games, equating to nine goals and nine assists over that stretch.
  • Cal’s Drullinger has made 40 saves over her last three games, including an 18-save performance against Oregon and a career-best 19 saves against Stanford.
  • Colorado ranks t-10th in the country in fewest turnovers per game at 12.25. The Buffs have taken care of the ball well as of late, turning it over an average 8.75 times over the last four games.
