ORLANDO, Florida -- UCLA's Fangran Tian captured the 2023 NCAA Singles Championship on Saturday after taking down Oklahoma's Layne Sleeth 6-4, 6-2. Fangran became the first Bruin since 1995 to win a singles title (Keri Phebus) and the first conference winner since 2013 (Nicole Gibbs, STAN).

The freshman played a perfect postseason, not dropping a single set in all six NCAA matches. The Champion took down six Top-65 ranked opponents including Stanford's Alexandra Yepifanova and USC's Maddy Sieg.

In the Championship match, Fangran cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Sleeth, marking the fifth time in her six sets at the championship with a larger margin of victory in set two.

Singles/Doubles Competition
The Conference’s NCAA singles competition field was comprised of six players from three programs (Jessica Alsola (CAL), Alexandra Yepifanova (STAN), Angelica Blake (STAN), Fangran Tian (UCLA), Eryn Cayetano (USC), Maddy Sieg (USC)).

The conference’s Championship run began with Cayetano falling to Princeton in three sets followed by a similar result from Alsola against Georgia. Stanford’s Yepifanova bested singles competitors from Wisconsin and Georgia before going head-to-head with UCLA’s Fangran Tian in one of two conference matchups. In the end, Yepifanova was bested by the Bruin, 7-5, 6-3.

Angelica Blake of Stanford saw her way to the Quarterfinals after wins over LSU, Pepperdine and Georgia. Paired up against Oklahoma’s Layne Sleeth, Blake fell 7-6 (4), 6-4 to end her postseason run.

Both Maddy Sieg and Fangran Tian won themselves spots in the Semifinals, and in a crosstown showdown. Sieg made her way into the Semifinals by taking down competitors from Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia and South Carolina. On the other side of the net, Fangran Tian bested Iowa St., Virginia, Stanford and Michigan to make her way into the Semifinals. With the two going head-to-head, Tian came out victorious with a two-set, 6-3, 6-2 finish, making her way to the Championship match and an NCAA Singles National Title.

Team Competition
Six Pac-12 Women’s Tennis programs, ARIZONA STATE, CALIFORNIA, STANFORD, UCLA, USC and WASHINGTON, were selected to compete as a part of the 64-team field for the 2023 NCAA Championship.

Both Arizona State and California conceded in round one of the tournament. The Sun Devils fell to Wake Forest, 4-3 while Cal took a 4-1 loss to California.

USC and Washington both advanced out of the first to take on second round opponents. After shutting out UNLV, the Trojans took on Pepperdine, where they were knocked out by a  4-1 final. The Huskies bested Arkansas in round one but went on to capture a loss against Oklahoma.

UCLA was on the right side of a 4-1 win over Texas Tech and a 4-3 win over Duke to advance into the third round. Despite the 2-0 run, the Bruins fell to Iowa State to end their postseason.

Stanford, the Pac-12 Champions, competed their way to the Semifinals, taking down Weber State, Oklahoma State, Ohio State and Texas A&M. No allowing their opponents more than two points in a single match, and completing two shutouts, the Cardinal ended up side by side with NC State in the Semifinal match where they were swept 4-0 to end the season.
