Cal Alum Callender Named To USMNT Roster

Jun 2, 2023

For the second time in 2023, California men's soccer alumnus Drake Callender was named to a U.S. Men's National Team roster, as the USMNT prepares to compete in the Concacaf Nations League semifinals.

Callender, a goalkeeper for Inter Miami CF in Major League Soccer (MLS), was also called up to the national team in April for the Allstate Continental Clásico.

This time, Callender is on a 24-player roster – including four goalies – that interim U.S. head coach B.J. Callaghan must cut down to 23 on Monday for the Nations League final four, which is slated for June 15-18 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The United States plays Mexico in a semifinal on June 15 at 7 p.m. PDT, with that winner playing the victor of the Canada-Panama semifinal in the June 18 final. The semifinal losers will face off in the third-place game also on June 18.

Now in his fourth year with Inter Miami, the 6-2 Callender has started all 15 games, played every minute in goal (1,350) and posted two shutouts for the Herons this season. He leads the league in saves (61) and ranks fourth in save percentage (76.3). In 2022, Callender posted four clean sheets in 24 starts and was a finalist for the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award.

A member of the MLS Team of the Matchday three times this season, Callender is one of four former Golden Bear goalkeepers – along with Stefan Frei (Seattle Sounders), David Bingham (Portland Timbers) and Jonathan Klinsmann (Los Angeles Galaxy) – currently competing in MLS.

Callender played at Cal from 2016-19. He earned All-Pac-12 honors and was named a Senior CLASS Award finalist in his senior season.
