Beavs Close 2023 Season at IRA Championships

Jun 4, 2023

MERCER LAKE, N.J. – Oregon State's Varsity 8 closed its 2023 season in 22nd place with a fourth-place finish in the fourth-level finals on Sunday.

The Beavs' 2v8 also placed 22nd while the 3V8 boat came in 16th in a competitive day of racing for all three squads.

"The highs definitely outweighed the lows this season," Oregon State head coach Gabe Winkler said. "We had some good successes and a lot of fun this past year. This regatta, the National Championships, has all of the emotions. Out of these 3 boats, we are losing just 2 guys: Mateo Olmedo and Nate Purtzer. If there is anything to take from this is that these guys are not really pleased with how we finished. This fuels the growth for next year. Every athlete wants more. Go Beavs!"

Oregon State's 2V8 boat opened the day with a competitive race in the fourth-level finals, being edged by Columbia and Santa Clara late in the race to close the year in 22nd place. The Beavs fell to the Broncos by just .88 seconds.

The Beavs' 3V8 closed the season strong, making a late push to potentially outperform its 16th seed but it wasn't quite enough and OSU finished right on its seed line in 16th place. Oregon State was about two seconds behind Wisconsin heading into the final 500 meters and made gains in the final moments before falling by .6 seconds to the Badgers and placing fourth in the heat.

The Varsity 8 closed the day and the 2023 rowing season with a fourth place finish in its finals. The Beavs put on a strong final 500 meters, closing on third-place Georgetown and gaining ground ahead of fifth-place Santa Clara as the race closed.
