Mahoney Signs with Men’s Basketball

Jun 6, 2023

PULLMAN, Wash. – Incoming freshman Spencer Mahoney signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Washington State next season, Head Coach Kyle Smith announced Tuesday. Mahoney is a 6-foot 9-inch, 230-pound forward from New York City who recently graduated from Red Rock Academy and will enroll on campus this June.

Mahoney began his senior season at St. Benedict's Prep in New Jersey, before joining Red Rock Academy in Las Vegas this January to conclude his high school career. During his final semester in Nevada, Mahoney averaged 18 points and six rebounds per game with Red Rock.

Within the 2023 cycle, Mahoney rated as a 4-star small forward and as high as the No. 2 prospect in the state of New York, according to 247sports.

"Spencer is a great kid, coming through our New York to Pullman pipeline," Smith said. "Spencer is a frontcourt driller. He can space the floor to knock down shots and has size. His dad is a Columbia graduate, so we have some connection there."

Prior to arriving at St. Benedict's in July 2022, Mahoney competed for Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, during his junior season. Mahoney began his high school career at Iona Prep (N.Y.), completing his freshman and sophomore years in New Rochelle.

"Part of the reason he's coming here is Klay Thompson," Smith added, "Klay is one of his favorite players. We are looking forward to getting Spencer on campus and in a Cougar uniform. Go Cougs!"
