USC's Austin Overn Named to Freshman All-America Team

Jun 7, 2023

LOS ANGELES – Collegiate Baseball Newspaper released its list of 2023 Freshmen All-Americans today (June 7) and USC baseball's Austin Overn earned the recognition after a phenomenal rookie campaign.

Overn is one of three Pac-12 players to earn Freshman All-American status and is the first Trojan since Ethan Hoopingarner in the shortened 2020 season to be named to the freshman list. The last USC player to earn Freshman All-American honors in a full season was Ricky Oropesa in 2009.

Overn set USC's single-season triples record with an NCAA-leading 14 three-baggers this season, finishing just three away from the NCAA record (17) and one away from the Pac-12 record (15). The Trojan centerfielder started every game for USC, hitting leadoff to the tune of a .314 batting average and a team-high 54 runs scored. Overn also added four homers, 11 doubles, 38 RBI and a .932 OPS. His 16 stolen bases were seventh in the conference as he earned All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 All-Defensive Team honors in his first collegiate season.

The freshman phenom led USC with 26 multi-hit games on the year and was second on the squad with 11 multi-RBI contests. In a season filled with highlights, Overn had arguably his best day against UCLA in the opening game of the Pac-12 Tournament, taking down the Bruins with five RBI on a game-tying three-run homer and game-winning two-run triple.

USC wrapped up a successful 2023 season late last month, finishing fourth in the Pac-12 thanks to a 17-13 league record and with their best overall record since 2015 at 34-23-1. The Trojans were disappointingly left out of the NCAA Tournament field, however, becoming the first Pac-12 program in 25 years to win 17 games in the league and not make the postseason. Heading into the year, USC was predicted to finish 10th in the league, with the Trojans greatly outpacing that prediction in Head Coach Andy Stankiewicz's first season.
