Cal Women's Tennis wins first Pac-12 championship tournament title

No.3 CALIFORNIA 4 v. No. 1 UCLA 2

San Diego- No. 3 CALIFORNIA secured its first ever Pac-12 tournament title in women's tennis on Monday, April 26 with a win over previously undefeated and regular season champion, No.1 UCLA (4-2). With the victory, the Bears also secured the automatic bid to the 2021 NCAA Tennis championships.This was the Bears’ first Pac-12 tournament championship on Monday, since taking home the 2014 conference title prior to the start of the Pac-12 tennis tournament in 2016. 

The match began with Abbey Forbes/Jada Hart's win over Cal’s Haley Giavara/Valentina Ivanov (6-3). Elysia Bolton/Abi Altick Bolton’s victory over California’s Jada Bui/Erin Richardson (7-5) clinched the doubles point for UCLA. Despite the Bruins strong start to the match, the Golden Bears prevailed with a 4-2 win over the previously undefeated 2021 regular season Pac-12 Champion, UCLA. 

No. 62 ranked Golden Bear, Hailey Giavara closed out her match on court 1 (6-4, 6-2) against No. 8 ranked opponent Abbey Forbes, which brought the score to a 1-1 tie. Cal’s Anna Bright followed with a victory over UCLA’s Annette Goulak, which put the Bears at a 2-1 lead. The Bruins answered back with UCLA’s Vivian Wolff defeating California freshman Jada Bui (3-6, 2-6) to once again tie the match at 2-2. In her championship debut performance, Cal’s Hannah Viller Moeller beat UCLA sophomore Sasha Vagramov (6-2, 6-3), which put the Golden Bears back in a 3-2 lead. Senior Julia Rosenqvist defeated UCLA’s Elysia Bolton, (6-7,7-5,6-1) to secure the win for the Golden Bears (4-2). 

The 2021 Division I women's tennis championship selections will be announced at 6 p.m. ET on Monday, May 3, followed by the The 2021 DI women's tennis championships, which is set to be held May 16-28 at USTA National Campus (Collegiate Center) in Orlando, Fla.
