Souza, Men's Golfers Earn Academic Honors

BOULDER — John Souza, who graduated this past May after earning three letters as a member of the University of Colorado golf team, was named to the Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar for the second straight year.                  Souza, who owned a 3.32 grade point average majoring in Economics while earning a minor in Communication, was also the Pac-12 Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the 2017-18 academic year.                  To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds and have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I.                   Souza owned a career average of 73.45 for 95 rounds, with his best season as a senior last year with a 72.81 mark for 37 rounds.  He is one of 13 Buffaloes to be afforded the All-America Scholar honor, the 20th time a CU golfer has been recognized as Souza joined six previously who have earned the honor twice: John Luoma (1994-95), Mike Troyer (1994-95), Knut Ekjord (1997-99), Ben Fiala (1999-2000), Stephen Carroll (2002-03) and Philip Juel-Berg (2015-16).                  In addition, the entire team was honored by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), as the 10 Buffaloes on the 2017-18 squad had a combined grade point average of 3.18.                  "These are tremendous honors for the team and for John," said CU head coach Roy Edwards.  "We ask a lot out of our team by missing a lot of class and this is a bi-product of their hard work in handling all the demands that come with being a student-athlete. In John's case, he leaves here as one of our most decorated athletes combining academics and athletics. He was a dedicated student, athlete, and teammate and he earned everything.  I also want to congratulate our academic coordinator Katharine Lindauer, as she deserves a lot of credit."

A Good Day For @SunDevilMGolf

You probably know Jon Rahm, Chez Reavie and Pat Perez had a good Thursday. You might not know Cameron Sisk did. The future Sun Devil is doing good things at the U.S. Junior Amateur.

Colorado Golf Day Set For August 27

BOULDER — Colorado Golf Day, the main fundraising event for the University of Colorado men's golf team, is set for Monday, August 27 and will once again be held at Boulder Country Club.                   Participants will have the opportunity to play the course that has previously hosted the men's and women's Pac-12 Conference championships as well as several of the state's top amateur tournaments throughout its history.                   The format is a four-person "shamble" with a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start, and entry fees include lunch, beverages, a heavy appetizer awards reception and prizes (a shamble is where everyone tees off, but then everyone plays in from the location of the best drive).  Individual entry fees are $350, with a team of four costing $1,200; players can compete as individuals or for their businesses, but also can compete with three others on behalf of their designated golf club (members, pros, staff members, etc.) and the winning team will receive a rotating trophy to be on display at their club.  The two-time defending champion in the latter is Boulder Country Club.                   There are also sponsorship opportunities available, as all net proceeds from the event go to the Men's Golf Team Excellence Fund to help defray assorted expenses over the course of the season.                   For more information on the event, please contact Gabbie Pelloni, CU's director of golf operations, at gabbie.pelloni@colorado.edu or 303-492-6141.  You can register online for Colorado Golf Day at www.CUBuffs.com/events or email josi.carlson@colorado.edu (303-492-3213).
