John Mateer's 2024 Regular Season for Washington State: By the Numbers

One of the best seasons in the country and in Cougars history

As the 2024 regular season wraps up ahead of confrence championship games around the country this week, Washington State (8-4) awaits its postseason direction ahead of bowl selections on Sunday, Dec. 8. Through 12 regular season games, however, and despite not having a conference championship game opportunity to compete in, John Mateer has had a season for the ages for the Cougars.

In addition to Washington State records broken, the redshirt sophomore has had a season that holds up across some of the great performnces over the past two decades. Below are several notable highlights for John Mateer's 2024 regular season in which he has amassed: 
  • 3,965 total yards of offense (3,139 passing, 826 rushing)
  • 44 total touchdowns (29 passing, 15 rushing)
  • 330 total yards of offense per game 
  • 261 passing yards per game
  • 68 rushing yards per game

Total Package: A 3,000/25/800/15 Season
  • Since 1996, only six other players have had a season with 3,000 pass yards, 800 rush yards, 25 pass TDs and 15 rush TDs as John Mateer has in 2024. 
  • Three of those won the Heisman (2016-Lamar Jackson, 2012-Johnny Manziel, 2007-Tim Tebow) and a fourth finished 2nd (2019-Jalen Hurts). 
  • Lamar Jackson is the only player in that time to have two such seasons (also, 2017, finished 3rd in Heisman voting).
Leading the Country in Scores
  • John Mateer has led the country with 44 total touchdowns through 12 regular season games. Over the last eight years, since 2017, a player who has led the country, or tied for the lead, in total touchdowns during the regular season has won the Heisman five times (2023-Jayden Daniels, 2022-Caleb Williams, 2019-Joe Burrow, 2018-Kyler Murray, 2017-Baker Mayfield).
  • Over the last 13 years, since 2012, the country's regular season TD-leader has won the Heisman seven times (also 2014-Marcus Mariota, 2012-Johnny Manziel).
  • Over the last 16 years, since 2008, the country's regular season TD-leader has won the Heisman nine times (also 2010-Cam Newton, 2008-Sam Bradford).
  • Over the last 17 years, since 2007, the Heisman winner has either had the most or second-most regular season TDs in the country 12 times (also, 2016-Lamar Jackson, 2011-Robert Griffin III, 2007-Tim Tebow).

More 2024 Regular Season Highlights

With the 12-game regular season now concluded, John Mateer's season highlights include:
  • Leader in the country with 44 total touchdowns (29 pass & 15 rush), ahead of Cam Ward of Miami (40, 36 & 4) and Shedeur Sanders of Colorado (35 & 4). 
  • Only player in the country with 20+ pass TDs & 10+ rush TDs and just the second in Washington State history (also, Timm Rosenbach-1988, 24 pass and 10 rush TDs).
  • Only player in the country with 3,000 yards passing and 500 yards rushing. The only other two with 2,500 passing yards and 700 rushing yards this season were Devon Dampier of New Mexico (2,768 pass & 1,152 rush) and Jalen Milroe of Alabama (2,652 pass & 719 rush).
  • All-time leader for most rushing TDs (15) by a QB in Washington State history and second-most by player in a single season for the Cougs (16, Jerome Harrison, 2005).
  • The second-most touchdowns by any player in Washington State history, passing Gardner Minshew II (42 in 2018) and sitting only behind Anthony Gordon (48 in 2019) in Cougs history.
