Around the Pac-12
Seven of the Pac-12's nine schools tip off the men's basketball season on Monday, Nov. 2, with the other two getting underway on Tuesday, Nov. 3, and Wednesday, Nov. 4. 15th-ranked Gonzaga is set to take on Purdue in Las Vegas on Monday in the league's first game on the hardwood since its return in July.
Top-5 League
Over the last five seasons, the nine Pac-12 Men’s Basketball programs have collectively been one of the top leagues in the country, with several notable benchmarks including:
- Top 6 average in NET ranking (91.1), just behind the ACC (89.9) for 5th and well ahead of the next closest (Atlantic 10, 135.4). Closer to 1st (Big 12, 48.2) than 7th.
- Six of the Pac-12’s nine men’s basketball programs have a Top 100 average NET ranking in that span, the 5th-highest percentage (66.7%) of all conferences.
- Top 6 average in KenPom ranking (89.8), just behind the ACC (86.0) for 5th and well ahead of the next closest (Atlantic 10, 135.2). Closer to 1st (Big 12, 47.1) than 7th.
- Over the last six seasons, seven of the league’s nine programs made at least one appearance in the NCAA Men’s Tournament, tied for the fifth-highest percentage of members (77.8%) among all leagues.
- Over the last four seasons, the league has seen 16 total NCAA bids across six programs, tied for the fifth-most bids among all leagues (also, Big East).
- In addition, and over the last six seasons dating back to the 2020-21 campaign, the new Pac-12 has seen multiple teams reach the National Championship game (2021 Gonzaga, 2023 San Diego State), as one of only three conferences with multiple men’s programs appearing in the title match since 2021 (also Big Ten & Big 12).
Welcome Back, Pac
The Pac-12 returns with a nine-team compostion in 2026-27. Oregon State and Washington State, who both competed as affiliates in the West Coast Conference the past two seasons, are back in the Pac-12 with seven new members:
Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Gonzaga, San Diego State, Texas State and Utah State
The Pac-12 boasts a pair of teams the competed in the NCAA Tournament last season, having claimed championships in their former leagues.
Gonzaga won the West Coast Conference and Utah State won the Mountain West, respectively. The Zags finished 31-4 after reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament, while the Aggies were 29-7, ultimately falling in the second round to one-seed Arizona.
New Faces, New Places
Two Pac-12 men’s basketball programs enter the 2026-27 season with new head coaches at the helm: Oregon State’s Justin Joyner and Utah State’s Ben Jacobson.
Joyner heads to Corvallis following two seasons as an assistant coach at Michigan under then-head coach Dusty May (now with the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA). Joyner helped lead the Wolverines to a 37-3 record and national championship this past season. Prior to his time in Ann Arbor, Joyner spent seven seasons at St. Mary’s under then-head coach Randy Bennett (now at Arizona State).
Jacobson joined the Aggies’ program following a two-decade tenure leading Northern Iowa’s program, amassing 397 wins and a .605 winning percentage, averaging 19.8 wins per season during his 20 years in Cedar Falls.
Home Cooking
Five Pac-12 teams finished last season with a .750 winning percentage or better at home.
Gonzaga 14-0 (1.000)
Texas State 16-1 (.941)
Utah State 15-1 (.938)
San Diego State 14-2 (.875)
Boise State 12-4 (.750)
Four of those teams have been especially dominant on their home floors over the past several seasons.
Over the past five years under head coach Mark Few, the Zags are an eye-popping 69-5 at McCarthey Athletic Center.
Meanwhile, Utah State is 58-6 in the past four seasons at Dee Glenn Smith Spectrum.
Additionally, San Diego State is 69-8 in the past five seasons at Viejas Arena under head coach Brian Dutcher.
Finally, Boise State is 65-13 in the past five seasons at Extra Mile Arena under head coach Leon Rice.
Zags Trio, Utah State’s Falslev Ready to Shine
Gonzaga has three players that are projected as top-100 players by several publications entering the 2026-27 season - F Braden Huff, F Davis Fogle and C Massamba Diop, while Utah State boasts G Mason Falslev, who is on several Top-50 lists himself. This quartet is just a snapshot of the high-level of talent set to be on display for the Pac-12 as play gets underway the week of Nov. 2.
Fan-First Approach
With the return of Pac-12 men’s basketball, the conference is putting fans at the center of its approach to men’s basketball, delivering unprecedented access to games across a broad national television footprint through its partnerships with CBS Sports, CW Sports and USA Sports. Over 90% of Pac-12 men’s basketball games during conference play will be featured across national linear television networks, providing fans more opportunities to follow their teams heading into the league’s tournament in March.
The combination of national television exposure and a balanced conference schedule reflects the Pac-12’s commitment to making its games more accessible to fans while showcasing the league, its student-athletes and gameday atmospheres to audiences across the country.
Pac-12 Basketball Tournaments Return to Las Vegas
In partnership with MGM Resorts and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), the Pac-12 announced today details for its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, returning to Las Vegas and the MGM Grand Garden Arena for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 seasons.
Set to tip off on Tuesday, March 9, 2027, both men’s and women’s postseason events will take place on the same days as part of two eight-game tournaments held over five days.
All nine teams for both sports will participate in the tournaments, beginning with a play-in game on the first day between the lowest two seeds, as set by regular season performance and any necessary tiebreakers. The tournaments will continue on day two with the first round featuring two games for both the men’s and women’s tournaments, followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals and championship rounds. Formats for both tournaments will see the two highest seeds receive a double-bye into the semifinal round and the third- and fourth-highest seeds a bye into the quarterfinal round.
For each day and round, the women’s tournament games will take place ahead of the men’s, all at MGM Grand.
