Third-seed San Diego State rallied with a pair of goals in the final 20 minutes of their Pac-12 Men's Soccer Championship semifinal at California Baptist to knock off the second-seeded Lancers 2-1 on Saturday night. The Aztecs now await their title game opponent, as top-seed and regular season champion Oregon State takes on UC Riverside on Sunday night in Corvallis in the second semifinal.
The Aztecs, who finished the conference slate undefeated, at 1-0-5, fell behind in the 42nd when CBU's Nicholas Coope opened the scoring just before the stroke of halftime. It was the Aztecs, however, who ended up with the spoils, thanks to a quick flurry that produced a pair of goals across a two-minute span for the visitors.
Jaxson Hutcheon brought the Aztecs level in the 74th minute, while
Luke Fischer, who transferred from CBU, headed home the eventual match-winner off a set piece delivery from
Oscar Emilio Trujillo Lizarraga in the 76th minute.
“I can’t say enough about this group,” San Diego State head coach Ryan Hopkins said after the match. “So many teams would have folded the tent on the season with what we have been through. But this group is special and we kept fighting, growing and learning. We keep developing week after week and that was without a doubt our best performance of the year.”
Oregon State hosts fourth-seeded UC Riverside on Sunday night from Paul Lorenz Field in Corvallis at 6 p.m. PT for the right to take on San Diego State for the league crown and automatic qualification in the NCAA Tournament.
