Fawcett Into Final

STANFORD, Calif.- Freshman Tom Fawcett will play for his first career singles title on Tuesday during the final day of competition at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

Fawcett edged rookie teammate David Hsu 6-3, 6-4 in Monday’s semifinal, and will square off against Santa Clara’s Ashot Khacharyan in Tuesday’s 9 a.m. championship match. Khacharyan reached the title match after cruising past Gonzaga’s Alvaro Nazal 6-1, 6-3 in the other semifinal.

One of 11 Stanford participants in the singles draw, Fawcett received a first-round bye and has won all five of his matches in straight sets.

Fawcett is bidding to become Stanford’s first singles champion at the event since 2011, when Ryan Thacher outlasted California’s Ben McLachlan 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 in Seattle.

In addition to Stanford, the ITA's Northwest Region schools are comprised of the following: California, Eastern Washington, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Oregon, Pacific, Portland, Portland State, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, Santa Clara, UC Davis and Washington.
