LOS ANGELES - One year after falling in the singles final at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, Bruin senior Robin Anderson was able to claim her place at the top, becoming the first-ever Bruin player to win a singles title at Riviera with a dominating performance in Sunday's final at the Riviera Country Club.
Anderson, the tournament No. 2 seed, took on teammate Chanelle Van Nguyen in Sunday's final, marking the first time since 2004 that two players from the same school met in the final. Anderson played a near flawless match, surrendering just two games to her sixth-seeded teammate in a 6-0, 6-2 victory. With the win, Anderson is not only the first-ever champion from UCLA, she also becomes the seventh player in 27 years to win both the singles and doubles titles at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, as she won the doubles title last year with teammate Jennifer Brady.
Also claiming a title on Sunday were the Bruin doubles duo of Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips. The Bruin juniors notched a third set tiebreaker to defeat Lina Lileikite and Stephanie Wagner of Miami, 3-6, 6-1, 10-6, for the consolation doubles title.
Anderson and Van Nguyen have both earned automatic bids to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 6-9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
