Senior forward Kylie McCarthy from the UCLA women’s soccer team was named the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Nov. 3-9.
McCarthy scored both goals in the final 11 minutes of UCLA’s 2-0 win at USC that clinched the outright Pac-12 Championship for the Bruins. McCarthy broke a scoreless tie in the 79th minute, following up on a saved shot by Caprice Dydasco. McCarthy collected the rebounded shot and dribbled near post before making a move on a USC defender and threading the needle to put the ball in the net past USC goalkeeper Caroline Stanley for the game-winner. Thirty seconds later, McCarthy nearly put another one in goal after making a steal in the USC backfield. With just the goalkeeper to beat, McCarthy went for a shot but was slowed down just enough to force the shot wide. She remained relentless in attack and was rewarded at 87:00 with a perfect pass from Ally Courtnall and buried the shot far post for the final goal. McCarthy came into the season with five goals in her career and now has scored five goals this year alone, all in the last five games.
The win at USC gave UCLA its 11th Pac-12 championship and extended UCLA’s unbeaten streak to 41 games and its shutout streak to seven games. The Bruins have scored 26 unanswered goals since allowing a 53rd minute goal to Stanford on Oct. 9. McCarthy has five goals and one assist during the shutout streak.
