When you glance at the UCLA record books, you'll see Katelyn Rowland's name all over it. She is the all-time leader for career shutouts, single-season shutouts, consecutive shutout minutes, consecutive shutouts. And she is now one shutout away from tying the all-time NCAA record with 52 career shutouts.
Warding off things, whether it's two penalty kicks in the NCAA semifinals or a life-threatening illness during a premature birth, has never been a problem for the senior goalkeeper. Rowland, in fact, thrives on pressure situations such as the penalty kick shootout in the 2013 NCAA semifinals that propelled the Bruins to the national championship. Rowland saved two penalty kicks in the shootout, using her teammates as motivation to make the big saves.
"You look over and see the looks on their faces," Rowland recalled. "They want it so badly, and you just want to do it for them."
Rowland and the Bruins play at USC tonight at the Los Angeles Coliseum at 7:30pm. A win would give UCLA sole ownership of the Pac-12 title. A shutout would give Rowland a share of the NCAA career shutout record and would set a new UCLA records for single-season shutouts (16) and consecutive shutouts (7).
